I had a crash, or rather it said memory dump.

what couses that? how do i fix that?

Here is where im really confused. some of my options for right click and the front menu of start do not exist anymore. My personal settings were set to defalte, and my windows media player no longer does the the little quick click thing on the lower bar.

will i need to renstall windows?

Sounds like the crash messed up some stuff. Run a chkdsk to make sure it's alright. As long as it doesn't keep crashing you shouldn't have to reinstall windows.

how do I run a check disk, and yeah it crashed on me last night, i like to leave me computer on, so after a while it just hybornates.

but last nights crash said it was Dirver Power State Failer. in usually goes down for diff reasons.

if i reinstall windows is there anything i need to be awhare of, loss of persanol settings, programs, ect.?

To run a chkdsk, go to start->accessories->then right click on command "Command Prompt" and say "Run as Administrator". It will ask you if you're sure you want to do this, continue and a command prompt should open. Type in "chkdsk /f" without the quotes and press enter. It will tell you the drive is in use, type in "y" again without the quotes. This will tell the computer to run the chkdsk the next time the computer restarts. So on the next boot it should run it.

Also, if you reinstall Windows with a clean format you will lose EVERYTHING. All personal data, all installed programs, all settings, everything. So make sure if you take this route you back up your files.

Ran disk check. not exaclty sure what it was supposed to do, while it was scrolling did see 0 bad secters. menu's are still fubar.

if i reinstall, will i be able to backup progarms and games as well.
i also have a secondary hard drive, would it reformat it as well?

As long as you have the CDs for the programs/games just reinstall with them, or redownload them if necessary. It's difficult to back up programs since they generally install things all over the place. You can copy the files, but they more than likely won't work unless you go through and find each individual registry entry and such. You shouldn't need to reformat the other hard drive. Any other members please give suggestions. It's a real pain to format and I always use it as a last resort.

Oh, and if System Restore is on you might try and restore it back to before the crash happened. No promises though.

yeah, unfortionatly for me, i didn't have System Restore on, so im stuck there.

one of the things that doesn't work that is really a pain is if i right click, new, i have no make a new Folder, is there another way to make a new one, a cntrl command?
as for the other stuff i can work around it.

I probably should reformat, cuz if messed with all kinds of settings, and i would like to get all the junk, installed engines off and stuff like that.

but just to make sure, if i transfer all my persanol data to my secondary drive its safe there and won't be accedently deleted? (not including if it gave me an option to do the second drive and i over look/do that option) [which doesn't make sense why it would]

Excelent! did a reinstall.

it automatically make a Windows.old file, just a backup of my programes, not games. so do i really just need to drop the programs i want into the program files, or just run it and let it do it?
