Start Menu on Windows 8.1

Since having a computer disaster my home page on my Lenovo Windows 8.1 Start menu has changed.

I used to be able to on the top right hand corner next to my user name and picture, able to click on Hibernate/Restart/Shutdown.

Now none of these options are available to me it just says START in the top left hand corner, not clickable. The only way I can reboot or turn off my laptop is to physiaccly push the on/off button until the screen blanks.

Does anyone have any advice please.

Don't be just pressing the power button as that will end up damaging your hard drive. Do yourself a favor and download classic shell to give you the actual start menu back.

Even though with 8.1 you can click on the bottom left to give you the option to shut down and restart I do believe.

Tried that

I downloaded Classic and saw immediately that this is not for me.

I uninstalled it.

When I click bottom left it takes me to the apps page as you stated but the facility to turn the computer off is now not there.

It sounds like you got reverted back to Win 8.1 without update 1. Those options on the Start screen weren't available until Win 8.1 update 1 so you need to apply any updates that are available for your machine.

In the meantime, you can right-click on the Start button and you should see the option to shutdown or sign out.

If you slide your pointer from top to bottom on the right side of the screen you'll have a list of options.. The power button should also be visible on the start menu in the top right near your user info..

All classic shell does is give you the actual start menu back basically, just like if you were using windows 7 or earlier. I don't run windows 8 so I really can't determine whats going on there. Have you tried doing a system restore back to when you had that option?

I deleted your other thread you created. You most likely need to update windows to get to the point where you were if you factory restored. You may have only windows 8 so you need to use the store to update to 8.1 and then download update 1.;

Updated Windows

I updated all the needed Windows Updates but I still have no way of turning off the laptop.

I attemted a system restore but could not find a restore point before I did the refresh that caused the problem.

Check system properties to see what version of 8 you have. It should say 8.1. When you boot up does it boot straight to the desktop or the tiles? If its the tiles then you are on an older version. If it boots to desktop then you are running update 1.

What happens if you right-click on the Start button? Don't you get a popup menu with the option "Shutdown or sign out"?

That's how I shut my Win 8.1 computers down since I NEVER go to the Start screen.

In Power Management in the Control Panel you can also just set it so that when you press the power button it will turn off the computer. I'm talking about just a press of the button, not holding it down until it goes black. You want to tuck your computer in to bed, not smother it with a pillow.
