Start up problem

Ok, Ive been working on this computer for awhile now. It initially had an issue of starting up and when you turned it off it wouldn't start up past turning on the fans. She wouldnt even get to the beep. I had replaced out the processor and she started up fine again, but then the GPU started giving out. Even the Kernal on it started to give errors. So I replaced it out with a new one today. It started up fine and was getting the drivers loaded when the computer restarted. When it did it only had a cursor and wouldnt go further. I restarted it and nothing came on except the Heat sink fan, the fans on the GPU and the case fan. I could hear the Drive spinning. But no signals are being sent to the monitors or the keyboard or mouse. I am at a point where I am starting to get frustrated and want any tips on what to do. Thank you for any help.

Do you have onboard graphics? If so, you have checked if there is a signal there?

Also, disconnect any IDE/SATA drives and pull all AGP/PCI/PCIe cards to ensure that that's not what is causing the error.

Also, have you tried pulling all but one stick of RAM? And then trying different sticks in the first slot?

Does the GPU have power going to it? Or a 4-pin the mobo near the onboard display? Make sue these are tight. Also, I guess it's possible that the PSU is going out...

Ok, after letting it sit all night long after being frustrated with it. It finally turned on again. It's weird. It will come on if it has been sitting a long time. But after it is turned on and it restarted it will only turn on partially where the fans and that will turn on but not the monitor, keyboard, or mouse. That is why it is so frustrating is because it is turning on but not all the time.

There is no onboard GPU and I just replaced it. I know it is getting power because the fans on it are turning on. Even the old one the fan would turn on and it would be loud that was another reason I replaced it. I have gone through and many times to make sure everything was pulled and placed again to make sure they are all nice and tight. I did replace the PSU awhile back and wondering if this might just be the issue. Could it possibly be overheating to the point where it will turn on and then when it is off and turned on again it only turns on partially? Right now I am just grasping at straws.

How long did it stay up when it came on last time?

If it's tripping a temperature sensor, then the mobo would just shut off completely I would think... If you can get it to come up again, download SpeedFan and post all of your temps here.

It could very well be the PSU - is there a seperate 4-port power-in near the back of the computer close to the keyboard/mouse outs? Maybe that part isn't getting power after a time. Please give us all of your system specs and maybe we can figure this out.

The computer stays on like normal when it is turned on which is what is so weird. It doesn't just shut off randomly or anything. But when you turn it off completely and restart it that is when you have the issue of it partially turning on. I did download speedfan before and everything is running at normal temps. The GPU was running at 60C but it was starting to give out and I wanted to upgrade it anyways. Their is a 4 port near the mouse and keyboard for the CPU.

This is the original specs of the computer before the upgrades..

I have since replaced the GPU and CPU:

- MSI N260GTX Twin Frozr OC GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 65W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Model BX80569Q9550S

I have also replaced the PSU but dont have the specs here with me at the moment. Also the ram was expanded from the stock 4GB to 8GB DDR2

Was the PSU cheap? You might try swapping that out... all I can think of ATM - are you sure it meets the requirements for you build?

It wasn't a cheap one. But I was overseas at the time. Im in the military and while over there you dont have that many options on things. It was what was available and I really didnt know how much power I needed. Since I didnt know the exact wattage of the stock one. So I went all out for the higher end one.. for some reason the number 700 keeps coming to mind. But that is the only thing that I can think of at this point. Because I was talking to my friend here and he was like if it was the motherboard it wouldnt even turn on at all even if it was sitting around all night.

Yeah - I would change out the PSU. I'm not positive that's the problem, but it's the only thing I can think to try at this point. This one should do nicely - I'm no guru in the PSU department, so someone else might have a better option for you.

San Angelo!? Holy crap! I'm from Odessa originally. Been swimming in "Lake Nastywater" many, many times. You don't know Stephanie and Terry Thomas or Jerry and Jerrod Duncan do you?

LOL You mean that lake where you cant even see into the water? LOL Yeah people told me they swim in that and im like.. ewww! I just moved here from Germany back in Feb. And it sucks because there really isnt many options in this town when it comes to electronics. Its buy something online and wait. But I cant complain about traffic here because there isnt really any at all. Only traffic I experience is at the end of the day where everyone is rushing off the base to head home after work. I really dont know many people around here or on the base yet. Sorry I dont know those ones.
