Start-up problems

My computer won't start properly. I get to log in, but then all I see is my empty background, no start-menu, no icons. I can access Task Manager, and there seems to be nothing out of the ordinary running. Is it a hardware problem, or can someone tell me what magic buttons to press?

I hadn't thought of it, since explorer was actually running anyway. I just ended that process and ran it again and everything straightened out.

What's causing that, do you think? How can I avoid having to do that every time I start my computer?
