Start up

Hi,
I have purchased Windows 7 and I noticed there's so many programs in the task manager running hidden and I don't think I need all them.
Is there any way to turn programs I don't want to run in the start off? Any software I can get to do it for me?

Hi,

If you press start>run and type 'msconfig' (without the quotes) then press the startup tab, this shows all programs that run on startup. Also on the services tab you can disable some things. Be careful you don't disable something important though!

Lol, you don't need to open the "Run" dialog anymore.

Just click Start and type msconfig, Enter. :good:

But yes, atthedouble2 is correct.

Things you can safely disable in services:

Windows Image Acquisiton
BitLocker Drive Encryption Service
Windows Media Center Reciever Service
Windows Media Center Scheduler Service
Windows Font Cache Service
Windows Cardspace
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Registry (this one is used by hackers to modify your registry remotely. BAD)
Windows Backup
Remote Desktop Configuration
Volume Shadow Copy
Windows Defender
Parental Controls
Windows Search
Security Center

All of these are totally useless for everyday use... disabling them does wonders for memory usage. my Win7 only uses ~500mb on idle.

I am very unsure what I can turn off.
There are 3 items I am not sure about.
My NVIDIA driver, HDAudioCPL and Java Platform.
I know I need driver for my graphics card but is that item the software that makes my graphics card work or is it only another advertising software?
Same with the audio item and Java. Do I have to have the java to use java in the internet browser?

All this will do is prevent the programs from starting when you load Windows.

If you have problems, you can always go back and turn them on again.

Under the "Command" column, I uncheck everything that's located in "C/Program Files..." unless it's obviously for your Antivirus software or Video card.

You don't need to disable the nVidia item (your graphics control panel - NOT advertising...) or the HDAudioCPL (your audio control panel), but you could disable the Java updater from auto starting. Once you load a web page that uses Java or a Java program, it will show up in the notification area. It should close when whatever Java using item is also closed.
