hey all,

i have an older computer just sitting around...(not that old it has win vista installed) and i wanted to try out some linux stuff... maybe turn it into a firewall for my house.... ne ways whats a good linux to start with

I was going to say smoothwall or Pfsense... pfsense is BSD but its a good firewall. for a actual desktop I have stuck with Mint...might want to try out the LXDE option as it is lighter than gnome or kde.

I would recommend Lubuntu 11.04, the LXDE version of Ubuntu, it is smaller and faster. Plus seems to have less bugs. Just me though.

debian is a lot better as far as i knew. as it works with even just the minimum hardware. ubuntu needs a lot more.

I recommend CrunchBang-10-i486,
a well-supported Debian-based distro that runs well on laptops and limited-resource PCs

Yeah, it's a shame people have to CYA, nowadays!

As Bob says, "!=\_\(\/\ 'em if they can't take a joke!"

Debian or Slack distros are the way to go!

If you don't want to learn, use ubuntu instead!
