Starting again with protection.

Hi guys. My pc was recently infected with with malware alarm and various other nasties, 1400 infected files to be honest! It's all been sorted now thanks to the chaps at pc world for £70.
Re-installing protection, what are best, or recommended??
Firefox or I.E 7,
Avg free or antivira personal (£12 but not too worried, avg's cheapest purchase is nearly £40!)
Zonealarm, super anti spywear, or spybot sd??
Any opinions or experiences would be appreciated because AVG free did nothing for me at last attempt!

OK, obviously reccomendations will be from whatever the poster is running on their machine and is right for them. So not neccessarily the best.

I run AVG 7.5 Internet Security Suite and is around £35, it's picked up various threats along the line and dealt with them all so suits me fine. I use to run McAfee but it slowed the computer down terribly which is something AVG does not do. There are plenty of free firewalls, anti spyware and anti virus that in my opinion are just as good, if not better but it all boils down to whether you want seperate programs or one suite that covers it all.

No matter what you decide on some will miss what others will pick up and vice versa so the choice is yours :)

Again I run IE7 but Firefox at the moment is not as vulnerable as IE to attacks

Well there is no this, this or this in your case, lol.
ZoneAlarm is a firewall, 3rd party software which you may need. Of course there are different firewalls, but ZoneAlarm can do the job.
Next, SuperAntiSpware or Spybot, definetely Spybot.
In addition, AVG doesn't do the Anti Spyware job. Perfect protection should include firewall, 3rd party firewall, antivirus ( AVG will do just fine! ) and some Spyware protection ( did I mention AdAware?).
