Starting from scratch

Building a new game pc. Basically all that I have decided is that I am going to start with and i5. Motherboards are not my forte and I was hoping to get some suggestions.

note: I don't want this pc to be much more than $800

for an i5 for a gamer at 800 you'll be sacraficing elsewhere, really at that price you want an amd cpu, you will not notice any difference while gaming, look at some benches and there is only a difference in a few games, and only one of those has a difference over 2fps while they are under 100fps, so you get the same performance game wise really.

phenom ii x4 960t (a 95w quad, and can unlock to a 125w 6-core, and if it doesn't, it is super cool so super overclocker) and a gigabyte/asus/asrock am3+ mobo, really it all depends on what you want to spend, on the whole system would be a better number so we can give you the full build list.

sry, forogt you had that at the top, but do you need the monitor, mouse, or keyboard? and also the operating system?

I'm not sure about all this "AMD is fine for gaming" chat.

My previous system was an AMD platform based around a 955BE. Many of my games suffered from low framerates (and this was on older titles). Upon switching to the Intel setup, the problem was solved. Whilst I can see the benefit of AMD if building on a budget, there will be a sizeable difference in performance playing most games.

I'm not slating AMD, nor am I some Intel fanboy. This is just the experience that I have had.

Not really. I think with your budget, you will have to settle for an AMD build.

It will be ok for gaming, but I just thought I would share my experience of switching from AMD to Intel, as there seems to have been quite a lot of talk on the forum recently that gaming performance between the two is roughly the same.

What was your GPU setup? If it was your 2 580s, then yeah, an i5 or i7 will get better framerates compared to AMD. But when you have a less powerful GPU, games rely less on the CPU and more on the GPU. My setup gets 60+ fps on BF3 on ultra, with my AMD CPU.

This was when i was running a 24" monitor (1920x1200) off a GTX295. So before the 580's and the 30" monitor.
