New here and to building computers. Im currently gathering parts for my first custom desktop. Its going to be a high end rig built to be very powerful and to last a long time before needing upgrades. I have some parts on order now but wont have all of them until probably spring due to cost of parts.

Anyway heres what im planning.

Case : corsair carbide 500R (on order)
power supply: corsair AX1200i (on order)
Cpu: intel core i7 5960X
Mobo: asus x99 rampage V Extreme (on order)
Ram: corsair dominator platinum ddr4 32gb (4x8gb)
Gpu: nvidia gtx 980
Primary storage: corsair neutron gtx 480gb ssd
Cpu liquid cool: corsair h100i
Monitor: asus pb287q 28in 4k display

Still undecided on:
Which Bluray read/write drive
Which windows operating system

Im intrested to here your thoughts and advice for a new builder especally the assembly aspect, i dont want to fry or break and of those expensive parts.

I'm not sure what kind of gaming performance you'll get in 4K with only one 980, but considering you've got 32GB of DDR4, I assume you're into media editing.

Very pricey build. I'd recommend win 8.1 as I haven't had the best experience with the windows 10 preview.

Be sure to ground yourself and watch some videos online for assembly :)

No media editing, just planning to use this thing for gaming and casual use but maybe professional use someday if i have the need. I just bought a ground wrist strap and will be working in a carpet free area.

I dont think any games play in 4k yet? If not will they upscale automatically from their max resolution to fit the screen size of a 4k monitor? Also with that setup do you guys think i can run a pair of 980s, (space, heat and power use)?

Games run at 4K and yes, a pair of 980s would work, but I would wait for the 980Ti as it will very likely have 6GB VRAM which I think is more suitable to 4K +

depends really when and if a 980ti comes out at which it will be 8gb. it will come in handy for 4k+ but in terms of performance of today its unlikely to use over 4gb on 4k with 2x 980's mine dont anyway and i run 4k. yes you will need 2x gtx 980's for 4k 60fps.

You could drop the 32gb to 16. it wouldnt come close to 16gb for gaming or light media editing. For heavy professional use it may come in handy but 16gb is plenty. id maybe consider the kraken x61 over the h100i personally it cools better.

nice build btw.
