startup problem

got everything together, started the computer and it says disk load failure, please insert startup disk and press enter.

i have a ds2, e6750, 1gb ram, and dvd burner. everything posted fine, the hd is a western digital and it's ide and so is the cd/dvd player. i have the primary on the dvd and the secondary as the hdd. for some reason the bios doesn't recognize either, and if i change the boot device it will just repeat that same error. the cables are plugged in properly, i even saw the cd/dvd light come on.

what do you think?

Install Windows?
 
try putting in the windows install disc and then start the pc up. it should come up "press any key to boot form cd" if it doesent, check to see if the ide cables are in properly and the power cables are hooked up to them.
 
there is no need for sata drivers with a ide drive i think the problem is this ( i have the primary on the dvd and the secondary as the hdd.) the primary should be the hdd.
 
it wouldnt make a difference, the dvd drive should be set to primary if you want to boot form the cd which in this case we need to to install windows.

Have you tried putting the CD in when you boot, there should be at the bottom of the bios screen (press--- key to boot from CD-ROM)

yes, i've tried this. the computer doesn't recognize the drives. it keeps saying boot disk failure, insert and press enter. i press enter and it keeps doing it, even though i set the first boot device as the cdrom and the cdrom drive has the windows cd in it. if i go into the bios and look at the primary/master it lists nothing and shows i have no hard drive.

all the cables are in properly. the computer is simply not recognizing the drives exist.
 
i just now thought of this, but i'm not sure if the jumper settings on the hd and the cd rom are appropriate, but i have no clue what to change them to (i don't have their manuals). is there a source online i can use to change the jumper settings? would this make the drives unnoticeable the computer? i hooked up the other computer this way and switched the drives when i took these two drives out and there were no problems with the old computer recognizing the drives, so i don't see how this could be the problem (although it's worth a shot).

that worked. for some reason cable select settings wouldn't allow either device to be recognized.

it's running now (i'm typing from it). actually i can already tell you the c2d is amazing. i'm formatting a hard drive, downloading drivers, and working on the internet without a flicker. it's great.

so the 34 celcius is okay for the processor? just seems high. also, the arctic freezer 7 didn't turn on (the fan) when the computer first started. then it would go on a bit...stop...go...stop...then finally about 25 celcius is started and has been going full since then. that normal?
 
boot from windows xp cd usually F12 follow instructions i dont think you are happy the os seems to of gone somewhere did you deete any system files??
 
Did you just apply it? Because it takes a good 150-200 hours for the thermal paste to bond, so it is normal to see a little high temps.
