stay 939 or go am2?

I've been considering upgrading my processor for a while now but am hesitant to because I'm not sure whether I should just buy another 939-socket CPU (possibly wasting my money in the long run) or just completely overhaul my system and go to the AM2-socket.

I'm not sure whether I want to go to AM2 though either because I just bought two 1GB RAM sticks (Corsair XMS) and I don't really feel like buying more new RAM.

So which would be the smarter way to go? Just staying with 939 or going AM2?

Most people are saying if it is a new build go with AM2 but if u already have 939, wait. There still are bugs that r being banged out. I have an Asus M2N-SLi and i am having some small issues.

i don't think you should upgrade. you still have a fairly new CPU and like you said it would be a waste of $ if you upgrade. also if you upgrade to am2 i think you also have to upgrade your RAM

i dont think you need to upgrade at all right now.

maybe later if conroe has some major advantages or soemthing but then maybe AM3 will beat intel ????

if you've got ddr memory already and you want to use it, then get 939. if not then go with AM2 just because its cheaper to buy ddr2 memory now. not to mention the fact that the AM2 will offer quad core less than a year from now im sure (anyone want to elaborate on that?)
unfortunately AMD probably won't offer a new architecture for either socket.

Well he already has an AMD X2 3800+ for 939, theres no reason to upgrade to AM2... yet.

Not quad core on a single socket but rather 2 dual cores on two sockets on the same mobo. From what I hear sometime at the end of the year but not for sure on this. The socket will be socket F (server/workstation socket) and not am2.

i'd stay with 939 if you have a good setup going right now, my cousin bought an AM2 board and he been have minor problems with it already

i wouldt sa ywaisting ur money i recomend always buying right below the best socket just ebcause i na few months some other socket type will be out and will be beter posibly 939 has had a very long life spand and will go on as it is the only diference si ddr2 and if u dont find the need for ddr2 as many of us really dont stay 939

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I'm just going to stick with 939 for a while and also wait on my processor upgrade, it's doing me just fine for the time being.

I know an upgrade will be in the future anyways so I might as well wait and see what happens when Vista comes out and then look at what I need to upgrade to run it. I heard a dirty rumor that it will only be able to be run with DX10 and that only the new video cards (GeForce 8series for example) will be capable of running DX10...anyone know if this is true? Or if this is just simple another dirty little rumor?

Divide: I will actually be getting my Raptor in the mail this Wednesday =). Based on all the reviews on it I think it's safe to say it's a very nice HDD and you can tell it's definately fast by the 10K RPM's.

Sounds like a good plan to me, IMO no reason to upgrade just yet.

As for the "dirty rumors" of Vista being only DX10 compatible alongside "Geforce 8" cards, that just isn't going to happen.
