stay with norton?

ive been using norton internet security for the past two years now, and have not had a single virus upset me yet. the only problem i ever had really was with some spyware. anyway my question is, do i renew my subscription to norton? or have you guys any other suggestions. would i be better off d/l one of the free antivirus programs thats out there. i have read on this site a couple of times that norton is not really worth paying for. that is my main reason for this post. i just want to know what you guys think
 
The reason that you probably havnt had one virus yet is because Norton didnt detect them:D

Norton antivirus is horrible,Slows system performance down alot too;)

I dunno what the other guys here will say but i personaly wouldnt renew the subscription to norton.

Just download Avast antivirus and Zonealarm firewall which are both free by the way and are very good.
There much better imo.
 
thats actually one thing i don't like about norton is the drain on the system. especially at start up. takes forever. avast sounds good especially as its free. whats this AntiVir, is it good
 
Stick with norton if you wanna keep getting viruses. If you want the best internet security I recommend Kaspersky.
 
hahaha yeah Norton is the absolute worst virus program I have ever used. all it does is frustrate you by slowing everything up and just being a constant annoyance. kill it!
 
I was just about to ask the same question. I have Norton and don't have any viruses that I know of. I am torn to get rid of it or get a free one. I hate to get rid of it if its been keeping me safe all these years. If I get Avast and then I have problems, I'm gonna kick myself in the @ss.

Im pretty sure Avast wont let you down.
However if you do want a paid antivirus Kaspersky antivirus 6.0 is very good.:)
 
Yeah if you don't mind paying for a piece of software consider
Nod32 I have used this for ages and it has never let me down.

i think i will go for avast and see what its like. does avg have its own firewall or would i need to d/l one for that also. and one more question thanks, do i un-install norton now that i am going to use a different anti-virus. thanks for all the help
 
you don't need a personal firewall. xp's built in firewall is plenty good, and your router shoud be the first line of defense anyways.

Also like everyone else has mentioned, norton is complete crap. Its slow and puts a huge strain on the system. My vote goes for AVG Free 7.5, but the best way to stay virus free is to not to mess around with websites that arn't trustworthy, stay away from limewire/bearshear/whatever the popular virus sharing err i mean song sharing program is. Bascially practice safe computing and you really don't need antivirus software, though i still recommend you run it.
 
yeah im fairly cagey when it comes to surfing, and can usually spot a dodgy site a mile off. so maybe that has helped me stay virus free. thanks for all the help
 
Give up norton, slows down the computer too much. What does anyone suggest about free spyware protection programs? I recently downloaded spybot from download.com (i think) and when I tried to install it, my trend micro antivirus told me there was a virus in it. so i'm cautious of that one.
 
my schools computers all had norton. a few weeks ago, a huge virus infected the entire district. the computers were down for about a week. we installed AVG Free Edition on them all. after that, we've
been fine.:D :D

AVG Anti-Virus Free and AVG Anti-Spyware Free is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only.
 
Wouldn't recommend Norton to anyone - it uses that much resources on the computer it needs a processor all to itself. AVG good and Avast gets favourable comments although I haven't used it myself. Friend of mine uses NOD and recommends it.

By the way, good luck removing Norton - the uninstall is hopeless - you'll need an additional uninstall tool from the Norton website - you may then be left with a fault in Windows XP that stops it from allowing any security updates - took me 2 weeks searching the net to get the correct fix for this - if you get into this problem post again and I'll post the fix
