Steam backup

I purchased several games on steam. I now have to re format my computer and don't know how to back them up. Is that done automatically, or do I need to somehow get the installer files.

You can re-download the games once you reinstall Steam. You can backup the installer files though if you want by right clicking the game title and selecting Backup. But IMO it's simpler to just wipe, reinstall Steam, and redownload your games.

You can actually just copy your entire Steam folder and put it back. The only thing to watch for is that you put it back in the same drive letter as you saved it from.

I have steam installed on a separate hard drive, so when I re-installed Windows, all I had to do was change that drive's mount letter and it worked just fine.

Right click the game and hit back up game files. Choose the location you want to use as your backup. Pick either cd, dvd or custom. I use custom and set the file size to the size of the game you want to backup. This creates a folder you can navigate to to restore each game. I am not sure if it backs up your saved games as well as the game files.
