I was at a friends friends house and noticed he had about 14 games on Steam, which seemed to load up without the use of CDs.

I have used Steam before, but that was way back when. Did he buy all the games via Steam to do that? or can you 'load' your games onto Steam?

You buy the games through steam.
Certain games can be loaded into steam using the CD Key
And non steam games can be added to the steam game list.

With non-steam games you gotta still use the CD/DVD even if you add em to steam

And theres only a couple games that allow you to input the CD key.

Is there a way to know which games they are?
I know COD WAW allows you to and i think GTA4 does

Download the Steam program from steampowered.com and look through through their shop integrated into the program, if it's on sale on Steam it's 'steam powered', meaning you can run it off the program without the DVD.

If you purchase a game from Steam or a game doesn't require a CD/DVD to run, then it will open directly from Steam. If not, you will need the CD/DVD in the drive.
