Ok. Let's say that I lost my My half-life 2 CD's, but I STILL have the CD key. Can I download another copy of half-life 2 without having to pay for it? In otherwords, can I download hl2 and then just enter in my CD key and then not have to pay anything?

It should work. As long as the cd key is a newer one. The old ones that were being sold (with WON playability and stuff), only had half-life, and will not let you download HL2.

You first have to install HL2 one time and assign the CD-Key to an account. Then you can access the same account on any computer with Steam and download the files. But you have to use the same account cause once the CD-Key is assigned to a certain account you cannot use it on another account.
