sticky dvd converting

basicly everytime i try to convert a video file (dvix,xvid etc etc) to dvd i get no signs of problems untli i burn on to disk,

its like the picture is not moving smoothly it keeps sticking so quicky that the picture is moving in tiny stages, my pc is usualy on net same time but i do not touch it til burning has finished-i would have thought that my pc should be able to multi task as i have 2x 2.4+ athlon mp and 4x512 memory (2gig)

when i veiw these films for quality before i convert then burn i use "vlc" which plays films perfectly

its not no majour big thing as it is still watchable but when youve paid stupid money on pc and 37inch lcd tft tv you want it to work properly

software i am using is-

cucusoft avi to dvd pro which has its own burning facility at 8x speed

please help its doin me nut in

as far as im concerned i think nero is sh!t would rather use a program to uncompress (convert)
and a seperate program to burn
 
Does a commercial movie dvd play back OK under the same circumstances?

When you burn to dvd are you creating a data dvd (ie copying the file as it is to the dvd) or authoring a dvd (plays with menus like a movie dvd)?

Do you check the readability of the dvds after you have burned them? Use cd/dvd speed, Scan Disc check.

I've no experience with dual core and on the face of it would seem to be OK to do other things while burning. However, there is more to pc operation than having two processors. Not everything else is duplicated.

Burning is not a high processor usage but data flow must be fairly constant to keep the buffer topped up. If another application is trying to write to the hdd the burn files are on you have a problem. Online apps are not very polite, they tend to override other activities.

all im doing is uncompressing the video files that wer downloaded off the internet and burning straight to dvd disk....

there are never any menus etc!

as for normal dvds, i compress them using dvd shrink then burn em there have never been any problems with copying from an original dvd disk!!
 
as for nero, i find that the software is very slow if i cant get anyother software to work i will give nero another go....
 
You mentioned the movies were OK before conversion and were bad after burning. You did not mention quality after conversion and before burning. I'm not sure what processes are involved using cucusoft avi to dvd pro but if there is any conversion of formats it's best to do that before burning. I can't image conversion being done as the dvd is burned but if that were the case it would be very susceptible to outside activities (high processor load and data flow must be maintained).

When you refer to "normal" dvds you are of course referring to your holiday videos and not commercial dvds that are illegal to copy. If that process works OK while being on the Net, I would try doing your format conversion (dvix, xvid) before the burn and check the quality at that point as I mentioned in first para.

Re speed. I've heard a few times about Nero being slow. I don't know where that comes from because 8x, for example, is 8x with any software. Nero will limit speed based on the media (max speed data deduced from the dvd blank). If other software does not do that, there is a good risk of poor readability. I've not noticed any slowness other than when I'm burning 30,000 files on a dvd it takes a while to cache files before the burn. Not an issue with a few video files.

ah i see....

well my friend you have enlightened me and i shall try all you say!!

**maybe i am being a little hard on nero**

at the end of the day i guess i will try to find a software that i like, i was just hopen for someone who knows of better than nero & cucusoft?
