Still getting those random restarts...

I've done a few things tonight in hopes to find the cause. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see what happens... For those who don't remember, the problem is just a random restart. I think it's restarted once during a game. Then a couple times when I used my TV-Tuner(when I first start the software) However, I think it's done it the most times when I click the back button in firefox...

When it reboots, I hear the harddrives shut off(I guess parking themselfs and spinning down) The screen goes black(probably changing the resolution) then I get the BSOD. Before I can really read anything on it, I get the Abit POST screen. Checks RAID, drives spin back up, and the machine starts to reboot...

I don't beleive it's caused by the PSU as I never have problems in games... My system doesn't get that hot, so that shouldn't be a problem either. I ran MemTest twice and passed 100%. All drivers should be up to date.

For some reason, I havn't been able to download Service Pack 2(using windows update), but I FINALLY was able to find the file and just install it myself. I hope this fixes it...
 
Hmmm, weird. My first inclination would be your psu....I had same symptoms, shutdowns in games, desktop, movies, you name it, it shut down. I messed around with everything for weeks until i gave up and took my rig to the store. My damn psu was faulty. I never got the BSOD or a restart which seperates your symptoms from mine. I guess I would start with the mobo. Perhaps its dying a slow death. On the software side, maybe it does have something to do with XP. I'm sure you know the drill, start swapping out potential bad hardware and testing.
 
I have had lots of problems caused by windows, so I REALLY hope that's the problem... And I agree about the PSU. That was my first thought, along with everyone else here. However, I started to see the BSOD so that changed my mind...

I really don't have much onboard to swap out... Just my video card and the TV Tuner which I don't think would cause any problems. I mean, what's it doing when it's not on? I guess it would be easy enough to remove if the problem occures again...

With my old machine, I had all grades of problems with 3D games. I couldn't hardly run anything without them locking up on me or causing it to restart. Red Faction was the worst/most demanding game I tried then, and it caused the most problems. After I reloaded it, my old machine would play Doom 3 without any problems(well, other than low frame rates :P) Sooo...PLEASE be the problem! LOL
 
If the tv-tuner is loose or somehow comes out of the port even a little bit it will force a restart because a piece of hardware is being removed (violently) without windows' previous knowledge. It happens with my tuner card (pos) when I jiggle the co-ax even a bit. See if it's seated properly after the next time is restarts.

P.s. It will also shoot a BSoD at you.
 
Yeah, I could certainlly see that happening... Well the card was very secure last time I checked but I can always get back on it. Actually, if something else happens, I plan to remove it and try it without the card. Mine is also quite the POS and I could see it causing the problem. What baffles me the most is that the card isn't in use ATM...
 
Doesn't matter if the cards in use, try pulling it out (but you really shouldn't) and see what happens. The driver is already loaded into windows, and it's not meant to be a removable device (such as an external HDD or the like) so it SHOULD do it everytime the card looses full connection with the slot. (PCI I'm guessing)
 
Pull it out while it's running?! LOL, hell no! I know some devices can do alright(I had a NIC slip out of a running comp once) but my super computer is at stake here! LOL, I think I'll just wait it out. If it restarts, I'll remove it WHEN IT'S OFF :P
