Still have problem!

I have a problem with my ntoskrnl.exe file missing or corrupt and someone on this board said to try this!

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
7. Type exit to reboot the computer.

I put in a windows xp cd and I get nothing but the black screen of death!
I have selected to boot from cd in the menu that I can access from pushing f10 at startup but nothing works, there is something in one of the menus about restore from disket I selected that and its for a flopy? This is a brand new windowsxp cd that I just bought at this point and time I dont even care about any files that I might lose I just want my pc to work again! How can I reload window if I cant get to the windows setup menu???????

Can anyone tell me how to get past the black screen of death to reinstall xp? I have a recovery disk now and I have a brand new xp cd!

what exactly happens when the cd of win xp is in the drive and u start the computer? it should show the boot up logo of the comp....then bo to a black screen and either give the machine specs or just say "press any key to boot from disk......."
is this happening...what exactly is happening from the moment u power on the comp with the win xp cd in the drive?

It does the same thing it does with out the cd in, I went into the menu where you select boot order and selected to boot from cd drive rebooted pc with windows cd in that drive and nothing, no setup menue!

I have a cd rom and a dvd drive and I have tried both, when I reboot I see the compaq screen and then I get a black screen with an error that says ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrrupt, I cannot get into the setup menu for xp at all. I know cd works because I tried it on another computer and I got the setup menu! This computer had one of the first releases of windows xp it is a compaq 5423us if that helps?

PS:it should show the boot up logo of the comp....then bo to a black screen and either give the machine specs or just say "press any key to boot from disk......." (This does not happen!)

power down the computer completely...purge the computer by unplugging the computer and holding the power button down for 5 seconds. then open it up and make sure all of the cables that connect to the cd roms are fully connected...especially the ide cables(the wide ones :)). check the power connections to the cd drives too, and make sure the cables are securely attached to the motherboard too. then start it again and try to get the cd to run.

IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT LOSING INFORMATION...THEN CONTINUE READING:
you can try to reset the bios to get the cd rom to read correctly to get the cd to read.
1. power down and unplug the computer. hold the power button down 5 seconds.
2. remove the small circular battery from the mother board and press the power button down for 5 seconds. wait 10 minutes.
3. put battery back in and plug comp back in and try to start computer with cd in drive.

Okay I have tried everything in this thread and I still cant get windows to boot or load, I know nothing is wrong with my drive, I used it the night before loosing my boot file to load nav! How can I just wipe eveything off the hard drive and start from new?

In order to wipe the drive clean you need to be able to boot from the Windows XP CD to delete the partition. Its one thing to get an error when Windows is loading that stops you from going any further but when you get an error in what sounds like when your box is posting, thats not good. I am thinking maybe to try and reset the CMOS jumper 5. If that does not work, i would try flashing the BIOS, perhaps your BIOS has somehow corrupted. The only piece of software that is running as of the power on self test is BIOS and if you cannot even get past the post, it makes me think something is wrong with BIOS.

If I install a brand new hard drive will it be just like it was when I bought it and alow my to use the system restore disk? I was thinking of buying a larger hard drive anyway!

If you install a brand new HDD and your problem does in fact lie within BIOS, you will still get the same problem occuring. BIOS is a tiny piece of software embedded within the motherboard itself.

Just to let eveyone know I was able to fix the problem, I had to take the battery out 3 times for some reason and then my bios reset and I was able to to use system restore disk...I am glad I had most of my moms files backed up, it was just a pain reinstalling everything like anti spyware and virus programs!
