Stolen Computer! Help!

Hey! I went to Wal-Mart and bought an Acer laptop for $527. It appeared to be factory sealed. I bought it, brought it home, opened it. However, the wrong model machine was in there. It appeared used, was an older model, and the serial number was ripped off. Needless to say, when I brought it back to Wal-mart, they refused to return it. Is there anyway that the computer that was supposed to be in the box can be traced? The serial number is still on the box. Is there anything that can be used to trace the owner of the laptop that was put in the box? I need help, someone! As of now, I'm out over $500! The Acer I bought was an Aspire 7741z-5731. The Acer that was in the box was as Aspire 6530. When I turned that on, the screen appeared smashed. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, I was wondering if there's anyway, if the person gets on the net with the stolen comp, can the serial number be downloaded electronically, somehow, and then the thief be apprehended!

with the number of people online at once, it would be near impossible to find them I'd have thought.

If Walmart won't refund you, get the authorities involved. It is either theft of your item, or misselling and false advertising by Walmart. I am sure Walmart will then see it your way and want to take the theft route

two choices right now. Contact the walmart corporate office and start from there with all information.
Other is small claims court. they will have to be represented by a lawyer. you do not have to. Im talking from the states though.

One other thing. Even in small claims court the paper work has to be filled out properly. Also i suggest you document all conversations. Date, time, names, position, phone number and everything said.

Its not hard. like everything else just takes time.
i would be hot also. this is the way i would do it.
good luck.

Thanks guys. I actually did call 1800Walmart, but they can't order a store to do anything, since many walmarts are now owned by individuals, not by corporate. The 800 representative talked to the store manager, and he just refused. He said that when they get the comps in, they are factory sealed. So, basically, he was calling me a liar. The small claims isn't a bad idea. Can i bring the swaped computer to the police and have them do a check on it? Also, i've heard about a software called adeona, which is supposed to be used to track stolen laptops that are plugged into the internet. Has anyone used this? If so, does it work? Thanks again.

I saw how a boy on the news get a phonebook in a ps3 box instead of the actual ps3 during christmas from Wal-mart. At first Wal-mart wouldn't give him a ps3 but after it went public they decided to. If he could get help maybe you could too.

Hope you can get your rightful laptop, I feel for you.

If I ever buy something that expensive from Wal-mart I wonder if they will let me check it before I leave the store so this doesn't happen to me... Thank goodness that didn't happen when I bought my 55inch tv, wow.

Not the police department. forget it. it will be likely handled in court. Not to walmart advantage. they do have to be represented by an attorney. On the other hand this software you are talking about does have to have special software installed or with hardware. i doubt it. Ive had many people in court. local city, stores, and repairs in the past. Most settle out of court. because of stupid stuff like a contract for work performed.

do like mentioned above. it works. you could even show up and postpone the court order. you can do it 20 times or so. Walmart would have to pay the lawyer any way each time.
One lawyer said to the company, pay it. then again i love to play this game.
