Stolen Computer

I just got back from vacation and came home to find my laptop gone. I've filed a police report, gave them the serial number, etc. to help recover it if it gets pawned, however I doubt that will happen.

My question is probably a bit silly, but here goes... Can my computer be found if it is connected to the internet? Since it was previously connected, can't it be traced based on it's former IP address or by any other means? I'm obviously not a computer person, definitely not my field, so any advice is very helpful and appreciated.

Thank you.

Forgive my ignorance. I googled MAC address because I didn't know what that was exactly. Can this MAC address help me in any way if I don't have the computer in my possession?

Thanks

I'm sure he probably got rid of your stuff on the computer, but do you have stuff like MSN messenger on auto-login when you start up the computer? Maybe there's a way you could exploit your startup programs. Otherwise... sorry :(

or auto sign in on msn or aim than you can find what ip that he is logged onto and track it

I was hoping there might be something like that. I have an iChat program that automatically signs in when the computer is restarted, however if you restart the computer it requires a password to log in. Is it easy to get past this security measure?

Thanks :)
