I work in I.T in supply, we had a laptop that went missing in transit and has been used on the internet and would rt since. I have the i.p address of the person whos accessed it. would the police actually do something as its a low value item and probably mean they would need a court order etc to get the isp to reveal the user?

By IP address it's easy to find who was using the stolen laptop.
Give the IP to the police and they will use their I.T. personnel to track it down.

The police don't use their "I.T. personnel" to track it down.

We've had laptops stolen from our school district before, we file a police report, give them the external IP of the computer after it was taken, then when the trace is approved they contact the ISP who then has to release the name, address, etc. of the customer who had that IP when it reported it. We've had good luck doing this and have found computers that students and other people have taken from school and stored in various parts of their house, or in one case in their shed.
