Stop .exe, .rar, .zip, etc downloads, but not .pdf

Hi,

At a friend's place in his university room, I had seen that the connection was limited in such a way that we could open any page we liked, but we could not freely download anything: we could not download .avi or .wmv or .mp3, etc, but the net worked smoothly.

Now, I have a relative, a young kid, who's come home for a few days, and the fool presses the download button wherever he sees it. So, is there a way to use the net without any glitches, but restrict the downloads of .exe, .wmv, .rar, .zip, etc. files, but allow the downloads of educational books like .pdf or .doc or .txt (or any other)?

Is it done with the help of any software, or through the browser itself? I am using both Opera 9.51 and the new Firefox, though the kid uses Firefox.

Thanks.

I srsly luled.

So basically you want to him from downloading some file extensions right?

Cohen: Ccleaner wont do that? Will it?

no the only way to do that is to use a hardware firewall such as untangle or smothwall

you can probably get a program but i don know of any off hand

???

Cohen, where does CCLeaner come into the picture? I don't want to erase tracks, I want to bar the downloads of certain file types.

Brian,
This is the first time I've heard of Untangle and SmoothWall; will have to find out more; they seem to be high-tech products...

Thanks.

Please Cohen stop. Your post has nothing to do with the problem.

What is your Antivirus HydraHeaded? Maybe it has integrated parental controls.

Hi all,

I have deleted my old posts,

I'm sorry, i didn't get what the OP was saying, i was on a friends ipod touch and didn't read the whole post at the time, sorry about what i have caused.

Compu specs

OS is XP Pro SP2, on P 4 3.0 Ghz, 1 GB RAM.

Apps installed are: BitDefender Total Security; Comodo Firewall Pro; Comodo Memory Firewall; Comodo BOClean; Spybot-SD Resident. I also have Peer Guardian 2 running all times (maybe its not necessary).

The link Tuffie has given seems to be a solution, but its a heavy product (price, specifications, etc), and I am not sure if it (or my computer) will run with so many apps installed. And I am still not sure if it is a firewall, or more than that, it does have a lot of features, but it is more like a product for large organizations, with many PCs connected, and having the ability to monitor the downloads of individual PCs; I am looking for something for the home user.

Thanks all of you.
