Stopping Those Annoying Processes

I'm new here so I hope I'm posting in the right place!

I am looking for a way to get into the list of programs that are always running in the background on my computer (windows XP). They are listed in the processes when I do ctrl+alt+del. I can stop them there temporarily but I'm looking for a way to get them to stop permanantly.

If I cannot do this manually, and need a program, I'd be interested in sharware for that.

That will only work if you have windows XP, if you have 2000 or below you cna make it work, try doing a yahoo or google search for MS config in windows [inser your windows version here] and you can find a file to download and intrutions for it. that is what someone told me.
 
Im running windows 2000 and you can go to run and then type services.msc and that will pull it up also.
