XP is not $200. You can get a brand new XP Home Edition OS from newegg.com for under $100. I bought Home Edition for ~$80 on newegg.com a while ago when it was on salle. Professional should be right under $100. If you paid $200+ you eithe r got ripped or bought multiple licenses or something.
agh stupid best buy they only have retail not OEM so thats why I had to pay $200. thats ok I got to laugh at a geek squad person. He was probably giving bad advice to people AHAHAHA. Yes I am entertained easy. anyways.....yeah I think the $80 one is the full thing

If you have the right contacts you can pick up XP Pro for no more then $10, legally

Guys/Gals, you can buy AMD 64X2 4200 dual core computers for in the mid $800 and heck this weekend at Compusa for $649 after rebate. Yep you will have integrated graphics in most cases. But you will have an updated dual core processor and it is cheaper to upgrade the graphics than the processor. I notice that most of the builds that everyone is listing above is using cheap everything. That is fine, if that is what he is wanting. If he is after performance, then that AMD 64 3200+ will be eaten alive by the dual core machine. He said he had a budget of $900. With that budget, he will have to skimp on many things. So; I still stand by that at sometimes, it makes sense to buy a better performance branded machine. Hey, I build my own also, but I just bought a new computer for my 6 year old, and believe me there is no way I could have built one for the $265 (yep) that I paid for his. Sure it has integrated graphics, but it has a pci-e x16 slot that I can stick a decent graphic card in when I feel he needs it. It is all about catching the sales....

you think we use cheap everything? packages like HP, compaq all use the cheapest stuff...

and i have never found a deal at: CompUSA, Best Buy, Sams Club, Circuit City, radio shack, wal-mart, etc... that couldn't be built just as well if not better for cheaper

OK, now I undrstand....but like I said before, there are times that it is just cheaper to buy a branded machine. As for a high performance machine, then I too say building is the way to go.

Try building this for $199.

http://compusa.shoplocal.com/compus...agenumber=1&rapid=251336&prvid=compusa-060319

Yep it uses pretty cheap parts, but it just shows what can be bought for cheap. Yep it has intergrated graphics, but also sports a pcie x16 slot.

Not trying to argue here, but building is not always the cheapest for everybody.

I own four computers; 2 built and 2 bought from manufactor. Guess which cost the most. The built ones because I went with highend parts.

The cheaper the computer tha harder it is to build with custom parts. You can't get wholesale prices and discounts like a manufacturer does.

The more expensive/high-end computers are almost always cheaper to build yourself.

And that $199.99 computer is actually $250. You can't include the mail in rebate because you pay that money up front and can't get it without the money first, the instant rebate I'd include though. You're not going to be able to custom build a computer with those specs for that price.

But honestly, who custom builds a low-end computer? If you're going want a computer that won't be for gaming and jsut for e-mail/internet, you might as well get a used P3 and save your money for at least a mid-end machine. Unless you're looking for experience, then it might be justified.

tru...
when the computer is down to 399 u can build it for cheaper...
but this guy has a 900 budget...

Was just trying to make a point, that a cheap budget computer is going to be hard to beat when building. The guy has a $900 budget, and yep he will be a build a decent machine, but it won't be a high performance machine. BTW, I bought that $199 computer listed above for my 6 year son, price matched at my military store so no taxes. I still intend to upgrade the graphics and add a gig of RAM.

$900 can buy a very fast computer. s939 platform, 1GB RAM, SATA drive, 64-bit processor, good graphics. You won't have to skimp on anything important.

And if you intend to game on that Sempron computer, you'll need to upgrade more than jsut the graphics for Doom3 or Half-Life 2. Does the powersupply even have the specs to run more than integrated graphics? I wouldn't spend too much money on it, it'd be like trying to pimp out a Geo Metro or Chevy Cavalier.

Hey that was pretty funny. Ahh don't forget to add in the cost of software to the self built computer also..How much is the full version of Win XP going for these days. You get my point. You did notice that I said the computer is for my 6 year old son. I don't think he will graduate to any of those games anytime soon. As for serious gaming; not to start another long discussion, but I would go with a gaming console.

nonono... with $900 you could buy a decent machine, or with $900 you can build a high performance machine

are you sure that PC can handle more than 1GB ram? ;)
i didn't think that model compaq could

XP goes for ~$80 these days, won't break the bank. There are also free alternatives. Console gaming is for people who need immediate satisfaction and can't be troubled with actually learning how to properly use a computer effectively...I agree it's an entire different subject, there are numerous threads on it lol.
