Story of the OC MOBO and the Hot running Northbridge chipset

OK, its not really a storry, oh well. I OC my CPU and I OC it hard just like all you other hard core E6300 OC'ers out there. Thing is my MOBO's Northbridge chipset I fear may be getting hot. I dont know if it is or not but I want it to stay cool in the heat of stressful work. AKA I want better cooling for and and would like to know if this is the way to go

Well what kind of mobo is it? Alot of northbridges tend to get pretty hot, even at stock speeds. Do you not have a temp measure for it? Im not used to intel boards anymore, been AMD for a long time now. But i know my old P4P800 the northbridge on it would get pretty hot even at stock speeds and it was just fine for over 4 years.

But if your afraid its REALLY getting too hot, that cooler looks like it might do the trick, although i think they are made to get pretty hot, as i said, the one on my old board stayed pretty hot.
 
Your Northbridge will get quite warm when overclocking Core 2 Duos, because it usually gets 50+% faster or more. One way of cooling it off is blowing a 80-120mm fan on it.

Well, you can always do what i did when trying to reach my P4s top speed.

Take off your side panel, get about 4 80mm case fans and 2 120mm case fans and set them pointing to your mobo and cpu and have the 2 80mm case fans in the back blow the air out. Works great trust me :)

The only problem is mounting all those fans, but if you have some duct tape and stuff to use as props it will work fine:D
 
^^^LOL. I dont have the time or money for.......how many fans what that again? lol. any way, would it be worth the money, cuz its one of those things that I can use from MOBO to MOBO.
 
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 rev.2 it doesnt look like its gunna fit though. I have a Thermaltake Big typhoone and that looks like it'll block it from fitting. DANG! I WAS GOING TO BUY THAT THING TOO! I HAVE THE MONEY! WHY OH WHY ME!

Many people have solved their cooling issues on the DS3 motherboards by pointing an 80mm fan onto it. It only costs a few dollars.
 
My case is a little low on areas where that is possible...everything is at OK temp, I just wanted something specal for me Northbridge. I love to OC :)

Edit-can someone tell me if my NB heatsink alluminum or copper?
 
ADE, as I mentioned in one of your other threads, you could just point a 80mm fan over it. I mounted mine on my GPU, with little blutack feet on the bottom of it to keep it in position. Seems to work very well, and it might even do the job better than buying the Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II Northbridge Cooler.

What speed do you have your CPU running at now?

Most likely alluminum. Iv never seen a copper heatsink on a NB stock on a mobo.
 
Yes, it's aluminium. Well, I know it's not copper...

ADE, mount a fan on your geaphics card, pointing on the NB. I can send a picture to you of what I did if you want...
 
That would be good. I have my CPU at 2.8GHz. I shut down my computer and with an ESD band on I tuched the NB for about 1 second and I almost burnt my finger...is it really supposed to get that hot cuz even though you, (Rambo), and I have the same MOBO, they're not the same chipset, so mine may be getting hotter or smoething...
 
Is there some way I can find out how hot its getting exactily? Some SW or some divice? because it feels like well over 100 derees F. is that safe???
 
There should be some kind of tempurature program that will tell your your chipset temps, like the Asus Probe II that i have.
 
No idea huh burger....Oh well, I decided to get the Extreme Sprint 2. I found out that It will reduce the heat by 10 C. That's a lot. And according to my measurements, it will just fit. Literally! my Big Typhoon takes up so much space that the 2 things will be touching a little, but that's not problem. I chose it because it is something that I can use over and over again on future computers. :)
