strange behaviour

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum and have come here to seek help.
I have tried a few other places but not found the answers.

I have a computer that behaves strangely. After a while it start to lag, not just in games but also in windows. When I am moving the cursor it kind of freezes every sec for about 1/10 of sec. Also my cpu usage is at about 7% - 9% when idle. Normally it is 0% when idle. This happens suddenly and quite often... Also when watching a movie and this happens the sound is strange.

I first thought this was caused by something overheating in my system, but now I am not that sure anymore.

I read my cpu (core2duo E6600) temp to 34C.
I also have one temp that I dont know what it is. It is displaying around 50C and when the problem occurs it can display everything between 160C down to -60C....

My gpu (6800GT AGP) temp is about 50C idle.

Recently I upgraded parts of my system and thought this would go away, but no.... Before I had ABIT AI7 and an p4 3.0GHz. I then changed the cpu and MB and still got the same problem after a fresh xp install...

Any ideas what this sould be? Is my psu maybe? by the way the psu is an Antec true blue 420w I think...

Please dont hesitate to answer if you any idea.....

I have no other PSU to test with.

But if it were the PSU should the temp of my gpu be reported that stangely and why do I get that strange "lag" or "stutter" in windows when moving the cursor??? Allso the sound is affected?

I had this problem with my old MB and CPU too...

Any ideas of what to test without changing any hardwares???

well a sure fire way to tell if your psu is not enough to power your e6600 and 6800gt, is it like mine? mine came with thge case. it is still an unknown brand, and all it says on the side is 330W.....

something like that should usually send up a red flag

This doesn't really strike me as a typical PSU problem, TBH. Often if your PSU is having problems you'll be able to tell by looking at the voltages on the various rails. Even if you don't have a multimeter, software readings can give you a rough idea.

My PSU is an Antec Trueblue. I think it is 420 W. As far as I know Antec makes good PSUs.

Using Speedfan the voltages are as follow. vcore = 1.14v, +3.3v = 3.31V, +5V = 5.03V, +12V = 11,25V... -12V = 0,47V, -5V = 1.69V, +5VSB = 5.59V, VBAT = 0.00V

Something say me that these volts are not reported right???

The negative rails will always be read incorrectly. The [email protected] is a serious concern (if accurate). ATX Standards call for a 5% tolerance, so 11.4V-12.6V. I'd replace the PSU.

BTW, there is not TrueBlue 420W. The Blue only comes in 480W. I don't suppose it's still under warranty?

Is there any other software that I can use to check if the volt reported by speedfan is correct?

If not, could it be my HDD or RAM maybe? How can I check and what would be the symptoms?

Thanks for all suggestions so far.

You can use other programs such as Everest to check voltages. All software monitoring programs get their info from the same place, however - the Winbond chip on the motherboard. If it's a sensor problem, using another program won't help.

Ok. I will try Everest later then, but in BIOS the volt where: 3.3=1.338, 5=5.040, 12=11.935

That is much closer to the right value than that speedfan displayed.. May the volt be different in BIOS than in windows or is it something reporting them wrong??

Speedfan does have compatibility issues with some (particularly C2D) boards. My +12V rail is reading at 0.9V, for example, so if the BIOS is giving different readings i'd trust those.

I assume you've just mistyped the voltage on the +3.3V rail.

I didn't mean to imply earlier that the checking the voltages in the BIOS wouldn't give a different result - just that if they did give the same result, there was no guarantee that it's not a bad sensor.

What could be the syptoms if the gpu, hdd or psu is about to fail?
Heard of something like this before?

Actually what it sounds like, particularly with the CPU usage going up, is that you have malware on your system. It sounds like badly coded malware that is causing a memory leak. I would do a scan of your system with Prevx1 and Avast! before you start spending money.

I am pretty sure it is not malware or something like that.

I got this problem the first time a few months ago when I was playing CS:s. And after that I have upgraded my Motherboard and CPU and done a fresh xp install.... This still happens randomly.

My best guess is that it is either the psu. hdd or the gpu causing this.

Symptoms:
cpu usage ~ 9% (doing nothing else with computer),
sound looping (all sounds start to sound metallic and every part of the sound is repeating fast), and hacking video and game performance. Mouse movement got stuck 1/10 sec every sec.
Temps: Reported temps are very strange. gpu is between -120 C and 200 C and teh same with (I think it is) the psu temp. But when this ends the gpu temp is back to normal, but psu is still displaying -60C..

I have touched the gpu-cooler, northbridge, cpu cooler and the air from the psu. Nothing seems to be very hot.

I allso checked that every fan in my system is spinning and working.

So my best guess it is an hardware issue, but I dont know wich one...

You have a e6600 on a AGP motherboard? I didnt know there were any AGP C2D motherboards out there =o ah well, so you learn somthing everyday. but just a question, what brand/model is your motherboard if i may ask

My motherboard is Asrock 775Dual VSTA.

It is not the best performing MB, but it is very good when you are in the middle of an upgrade. Can take either agp or PCIe. DDR or DDR2....
