Strange occurance

I dont know but this seems strange to me unless I am just an uber noob when it comes to computers, which is a good possibility :D. I changed my 512 sticks around because I read somewhere that it can help with a counter-strike half life engine memory read error and it seems like it has worked. The strange this is that I found an old 256 stick sitting around and I decided to throw it in also along with the 2 512 since I have 4 slots and I booted up again after that and to my surprise once I went into system under the computer info it only read 512 MB of ram as opposed to 1250 or even 1Gig. I took the 256 out and it returned to the normal 1gig. Also, I noticed that the 256 is the same make and model and MHz frequency and everything also. I wonder why this has happened.

I TAKE THAT BACK IT DIDNT HELP WITH COUNTER_STRIKE GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr

What motherboard do you have? it might be so old that it only supports 1g ram, assuming we are talking about DDR and not DDR2 or DDR3

On the manufacturer site it says it supports up to 4 gig DDR, I think I am going to have to upgrade my mobo if I want to do any upgrades gaming wise unfortuantely.
