strange problem

Dual Cores for Intel can be as low as $50.

Wonderful! The idea when planning a new build however is first getting an idea on just which make and model cpu you will want running on it. I would have gone with the AMD 6400+ X2 when first putting the recent build together here being the fastest stock AM2 model but none were instock since they sold out fast. But 3ghz was better then 2.2ghz.

the 2.2ghz was the first amd cpu ive dealt with.Personaly im more partial to intel. The rig before the geforce was a biostar u8668 grand running a socket 478 1.7 ghz celeron and on the apps i use the 1.7 actualy seemed faster . only went to the geforce because the u8668 did not support pci-e and the fact that i bought the stock rig the geforce was in for 20 bucks from a friend.

Ive only realy gotten into customizing my pc in past year and a half to 2 years and up till now it was all done for free or very cheap . mostly used components. Right now over the course of 2 years ive spent a total of about 280 dollars on hardware.100 on the 320 gb hdd ,40 for the x1300 pro, 32 for the 671t-m ,20 for the 80gb hdd (was in the rig with the geforce),50 for the 1gb crucial mem,20 for 2 different cpu cooling fans, and 20 for the old u8668 with cpu .all the above was purchased new sept the geforce rig and the old u8668 some from ebay some from friends who bought stuff they couldnt use .
The 320 hdd and mem were from pc store. everything esle was given to me have a friend that keeps blowind psus due to roaches and dust and instead of just buying a psu she buys new pcs and i usualy get the old onelast one was 3 months old got the 3.33 ghz a 160gb hdd and a gig of pc3200 mem ( for the record i do not have roaches i thurougly disassemble and clean out anything i get from them before i take it home)

all in all i dont think ive done to bad

You can't complain too much when you get almost parts for next to or for nothing. Now you have to take the best of what you have to see where you can go with it. The first building block is not any particular model cpu but rather a board that will best suit your needs since that will offer features as well as support for the rest. A good reliable tail kicking supply goes along with it.

Problem fixed picked up a Brand new intel dq965gf mobo for 45 bucks .installed it then kicked the shit out of it never even gliched 100% stable a lil overkill with the built in security features for my needs but will allow for many future upgrades will support quad core and 8gbs of ram cant imagine why youd need 8 gigs of mem but atleast i know if i need it i can use it

The real down side to all this is from the time i purchased this board till 2 weeks later when i recieved it never once did my pc shut off guess maybe it just wanted me me to spend more cash lol . Gonna give the ecs a second chance later on . Im currently using the geforce board letting my 8 year old build his own rig and when i get a new cpu we'll try the ecs and 3.33ghz in there instead .

If nothing else im sure theres not alot of 8 year olds who can say they have there own mid to high end system they built themselves when hes done his specs will be biostar geforce 6100-M9 mobo 2.2ghz amd 2 gb ddr1 mem 160 gb wd hdd and either my readeon x1300pro or the geforce 8400 gs i just bought on ebay not sure which is the better card just yet

Both are low end cards by ATI and NVidia there. The 8400 is DX10 compatible while the old build here saw an X1300 Pro running Vista along with XP with that came out. I still have to locate a good pci card for an old Dell running 98 without an AGP port just so dvds can be played on the old system. 9250? who knows!

9250? who knows!

Don't even think about that card... especially if you plan on playing games that are DX9... (it's a DX8.1 card FYI)...

But there are tricks to still let it play, let's say, BF2.

There wouldn't be anything as new as BF2 to worry on the old Dell model. 98SE saw a clean install on the old boat anchor! :P

98 and some basics only was specified by the parents for the system given to a kid by his aunt. Talk about onboard video seen in the newer systems look at a system premade in 2000 to run 98 or NT. 8.1 will work for cartoons on dvds and no 1st person shooters.

Boat anchor? Good idea! :P

1st person shooters? Halo could run fine. Heck, I had NFS Underground 2 run on low-medium settings on onboard graphics

I'm not the one that decides what games if any go on there. The main problem was simply not being able to run dvd movies due to the limitations seen with the really lame onboard as well as not having a regular software player like PowerDVD on.

The Dell there was an old mini AT type tower case with only pci slots and 32mb onboard video. You can see where that goes at this point in time as far as any 98 compatible players being tried. The rest is under parental control there.

might be a problem with the circuits on your mother board. not an easy fix, i'd say check the wiring on everything, cause thats something you can do. do you have any other computers lying aoround (friends computer). I'd try switching some of the hardware to see if you can isolate the problem. if it is the mother board, try just bringing that in rather than the whole comp, save ya a bundle..

There are many freeware DVD decoders out on the net, but take in mind 99% of them contain spyware

I learned that the hard way :(

The problem with that old system is that the onboard lacks support for any newer players that will still run on 98. There's also no internet connection setup for that system otherwise XP would have likely been the OS. The 9250 would be one still seeing 98 drivers available for that old clunker. :P

If you can find any :P

Wow... ATI still has Windows 98 support and W98 drivers for the 9250. :D

ATI likes to archive their stuff to keep onhand. A few sites like guru3d.com and omegadrivers.net usually have a list of driver sets onhand as well.

The software disk that comes with the card will all that will be needed for the old clunker however. Once the kid is a little older and not throwing things around the parents will start to pass along updated systems.

I know the subject is kind of changing, but...
About the computer shutting down abruptly even from the slightest touch...

Possibilities:
-Motherboard is touching the metal framing of the case
-Power Supply cord is loose
-Unit Overheating (has nothing to do with touching/bumping BUT it could be a coincidence)
-Power Fluctuations (how old is your house wiring?)
-Defective circuitry in the motherboard
-Defective Power Supply Unit

Check all these xcept the PSU--dangerous! Good Luck

ALSO: could it be that the power button might be jiggled every time the PC tower is touched?
A classic problem on Gateway towers circa 1998-2000. When reinstalling bezel (faceplate) you have to make sure that the power button is aligned w/ the hole it has.

Not touching the case but could be bumping a standoff if one was put in wrong. A close inspection of alll connections and even the use of a continuity tester to simply see if there is a break of some type if not simply a loose wire inside a plug would be another thought.

All these things have already been mentioned earlier in the thread. We now have to wait to hear what ghetto toon finds there.
