Strange Problems with Display Port and HDMI Cables

Hello Friends

I recently built a new case and added the AMD Radeon RX 6700 10GB graphics card from my old system, which I thought was still sufficient for me. However, when I plugged the display port cable I had between the new case and the monitor, no image appeared on the screen even though I selected the display port output on the monitor.To solve the problem, I bought an HDMI v2.0 cable and connected it between the case and the monitor, and the screen did display. However, I have two problems...

1. Why is there no display on the screen when I plugged in the Display Port cable after the case upgrade, even though I'm using the same monitor and graphics card? Would using a different Display Port cable solve the problem? If so, which brand do you recommend?

2. When I plug in the HDMI cable, the maximum screen refresh rate is 60Hz. The maximum refresh rate is listed as 60Hz in the operating system's advanced display settings. Why am I not getting a 144Hz refresh rate option even though I'm using an HDMI v2.0 cable?

Thanks

Not saying it is but most monitor these days have an input selection before they can display. My Asus monitor won't display anything if its on the incorrect input. So if its set to hdmi and I used a display port then its not gonna show anything. Most of the older models will auto sense what input it should be in.

Make sure you are using the latest video card driver. Other than that, and not knowing more about your system then couldn't tell you whats going on.

As above:

1) input selection
2) GPU driver, I don't see the AMD icon in your tray

@johnb35

As I stated in my first post, I made the right input selection for both types of cables when I plugged them.

I use the latest GPU driver (Adrenalin Edition 25.9.1), my OS is Win 10 Pro v22H2 and this is my full system...

Old parts...

I completed the system by adding a 500 GB SSD (A-Data Legend 800), two mechanical HDDs (1 TB+4 TB) and an AMD Radeon RX 6700 10 GB GPU from my old system.

@beers

1.No input selection problem

2. I’ve just took out AMD icon from system tray.

Not to be that guy, but just want to make sure that it isn't the case but...

Did you connect the displayport cable to the back of the GPU or the motherboard rear i/o?

Well then you can try to plug the DP cable into the mobo rear i/o (ensure iGPU is enabled in BIOS, sometimes they are disabled by default).

See if you get an input. At least that way it can confirm that it's either the cable or your monitor's DP port is an issue. If the monitor works, then it's likely the cable. I have my doubts that all 3 DP ports on the back of a GPU has failed.

Ok, I will try these when I return home.

Thanks

@Intel_man

I enabled the IGPU in BIOS, plugged the DP cable to the mobo instead of the GPU but there was no input.

Anyway, at least I cleared this possibility.

Obviously, it is time for me to get a new DP cable and I have a question about it...

The manual of my monitor says, its DP socket is v1.2. If I get a newer DP cable, like v2.0 or v2.1, would it cause a compatibility problem?

Before you buy a new cable, try this. Plug both HDMI and DP cable and press WIN+P on the keyboard. Then use your UP and DOWN arrow keys to toggle through every option. Your screen will eventually flash or turns black for a couple of seconds until you get image on your screen.
