Strange Question About IPs

Well, I think it might be strange anyway.

Okay so....short version (I think).... I encountered a person on a message board who I thought might be a case of multiple identities. It was really bugging me because there was a very sensitive story behind this person, so I had a personal interest in the matter...and no, I don't normally worry about stuff like this...but this was a special case for me.

So I did the unethical and asked my friend who was/is the admin if this was so and so's IP...which I provided privately via PM. We had moderated at one time together so he was cool with it. He checked and said no and gave me the IP of said person. I did a check. Okay. Service provider was not even within the same vicinity but in fact on opposite sides of the states.

Well...that should have been enough...but it really wasn't because I swear everything this person said was getting under my skin...everything...I mean everything was so very familiar...that I couldn't let it go.

So I asked another friend of mine who works w/computers if there was any possibility this person could be who I thought it was. He asked if this person had access to a network of computers...and the answer of course was yes...because that's what he did at his job. He said he thought it might be possible to dial up a remote location and post...that the IP might show up as being a totally different one from this person's actual ISP...and that my admin friend probably didn't know what he was talking about. However, he also said he wasn't sure.

I just want to know if this could be true. This is something that has seriously bothered me for a long time now. I would love to put my thoughts behind me, regardless of what the answer is. It's just something really personal to me. I wouldn't bother posting this if it wasn't something that truly bothered me. But it does...still.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Hmm...interesting. And thanks for that. I happen to have a pretty good gut instinct about stuff. My gut has been telling me I'm right about that person...regardless of being told I was wrong. I actually made myself sick over this matter...sorry for the melodrama here, but it's the truth. Put it this way, I'm into language (English)...got my degree in it even. I might not be a computer genius, but I have my ways of figuring stuff out. The use of specific words no other people use and punctuation has been just way too obvious for me.

hmmmmm

Is it possible that this person got re-located to the other coast? If not than yes, what Cromewell said is also a definite possibility. (Although we won't discuss exactly how... ;))

What about routers?
Doesn't that gives different IPs to outcoming connections?

If there's something you can't say on the board, please PM me. I am not asking this for any bad reason. I'm asking because I think I was made a fool of by someone pretty darned important to me. Put it this way, it was part of the reason I left a message board I really liked...and that wasn't easy for me.

No, this person didn't move. I've actually spoken to this person on the phone not all that long ago. The number I called shows the right place on the phone bill....geez.....unless.... this person uses a cellphone from the other side of the coast!!! No wait! I'm not going there. :P  lol kidding. No the person didn't move.

Proxies? Come on a lot easier than that...

All you need is a modem, and a call center to dial into. You get the Ip of that call center, and that location (via IP).

I did it to fool a game Admin who was watching an online game account of mine for multiple accounts.. :)

Thank you. I mean it. :) I was actually afraid to post my question because I didn't know how it would be taken. I'm glad I asked now. So I'm not crazy to think this was possible. My admin friend thought I had gone bonkers. Heck, I thought I had gone bonkers too...and it embarrassed me at the time the way I went on about this particular issue. Well well well....

My IP says that I'm in a different country, sometimes the internet provider shows up, so it may not be where he is.

But to pull one over on a friend, it it an easy way to look like you are somewhere else. Also, most DSL/CABLE providers give FREE dialup access as a backup for when their services go down. So it would cost nothing, but the long distance charges... Even then with VO-IP it is low.

Be careful with what he/she is saying.

Ha. I do have DSL. Trouble is, I don't want to hurt anyone the way I got hurt. Thanks though. I do appreciate your feedback. Been digesting this stuff all day. :(
