strange question

i'm just looking at some aftermarket cpu coolers - typhoon, zalman, etc. these are big and heavy beasts, and while it's clear they increase the longevity of your processors because of the temp decreases, do they have any negative affect on your motherboard due to the weight? i would just think with the motherboard sitting vertically and the gravity pulling the heatsinks down, the motherboard would be getting some unneccessary force around the processor area that would be more detrimental in the future. anyone agree?

The heatsinks are very securely fastened and don't budge at all when you place the case vertically. They do exert some force on the motherboard but not nearly enough to damage it.

not always, when i had a socket 7 Pentium 1 166Mhz, the fan / heatsink clips were so powerful that it jsut snapepd the clips on the motherboard off... >(

Actually with the really heavy Zalman ones there is actually a disclaimer to be careful when carrying around your computer, because they weight like 800g or more. The key is to make sure ALL the latches are fastened so the weight is distributed even so you don't have point that bear all the wieght, that is how your motherboard gets damaged.
