Strange Super Slowness

Hello

It takes 10 min. for the icons and tool bar to appear on my desk top. Everything else takes very long as well. It all started when I hooked up an external USB 2.0 DVD player burner.
I unhooked it and did a virus scan even though it's unlikely a virus got in. It didn't need a defrag then I did a restore and it's still behaving the same way. Zone alarm was also behaving strangely even though I was off line and I can't remove it.
Any suggestions as to what else I could try?
Thanks

Do you have the windows install cd?

If so i would just re-install windows again because it would save all the hastle of trying to figure out the problem and a fix for it....well thats what i would do anyway lol.

you said it didnt need a defrag?

How do you know it didnt need it?...did you recently just defrag it before or something?

I have this problem aswell but this was after i updated my nvidia drivers, I whipped out the hoover and got all the dust out (alot), and still slow, i hope i didnt damage the fany coz i just put the sucker to the fan , making it spin.

I'd download this things calls WheresJames Startup Manager... Search wheresjames on google and you'll find it. It'll then let you choose what starts up and chances are you'll need to remove, or just delete some things from the start up because generally thats where the problem lies.
