My Maxtor 5000DV portable hard drive was working last night, this morning when I turned it on it started making a chiming sound like a childrens melody!!

I listened carefully and I could not hear the fans, the drive didnt appear in my computer under Xp but the add/remove hardware icon appeared in the task manager.

I dont even know how to replace the fans if they are broke as Im afraid I will total the drive if I do,the drive is not in warranty and I cant send it back.

Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on???

Open it up and see ;)
It sounds like your mobo could have gone boom....how many beeps does the hard drive do in a row??

i wouldnt of throught itd be the mobo if he can still get into windows but just cant see it in my computer (remember its and external hdd). can you even open hard drives, i know you cant with internal, but can u open portable ones. if you can take some pictuires of it and post em back.

The thing is Iam not sure how to open it,it doesnt seem to have any screws on the outside,do a google image search to see what I mean,Iam afraid that if I do open it then I will be doing more damage then I should,I will however leave it as a last resort.

yea dont open it yet. i know you cant open internal hard drives because of the vacumn created inside, but im not sure about external hard drives, so wait for more advice on it. or if you need it quickly, take it to a coomputer shop and ask them to sort it out. another thing, how long have you had the drive

Is the hard drive itself making the noise?

Did you use the "add hardware" function?

Does the fan normally run or is it using a temp sensor to trip it? If nothing works you could try removing the drive from the enclosure and puting in the computer as an internal drive. It could be possible that the IDE/USB adapter is bad.

An external drive (AFAIK) is an internal drive in an enclosure

This drive is a hard drive surrounded by a plastic enclosure that is moulded on,It contains no screws so I wouldnt be able to put it back together,if i were to bring it to a repair shop they would charge €150 just to fix it.

My friend got a virus on his comp and the cheapest price he got quoted was €150 and all they had to do was use Xp recovery console!

You can't pop off those plastic pieces on the sides? I'd think that there'd be screws under to open it up. For 150 pounds you could just buy another external drive (or build one yourself ;)) so I wouldn't recommend that. You might want to try Maxtor's tech support also.

Just crack it open and use it as an internal as recommended earilier, I've had people come to me wit hthe same problem, enclosure fans were broken, so I just took a screwdriver to the seam of the enclosure and broke it out.

that defys the point in spending more money and buying and external drive

Didnt know that

The drive is connected Via a USB connector and not by an IDA or SATA interface, how would I be able to use it internally??,If i were to open it and try and use it internally then the USB connetor would simply cease to function because it is attached to the case.

External drives use an IDE to USB adapter so you'd be fine.

Im just wondering though what the hell is the chimming sound,It doesnt sound mechanical in any way,it sounds like it is actually comming from a speaker in the driv ebut i cant see anything.

Does anyone know if these drives are fitted with a warning system like this that makes this noise.
