Stuck on Installing Ubuntu on Virtual PC '07

I have Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and I want to put Ubuntu on it i jest wanted to ask please what i have to do next i am very stuck :) this is what ive done already:

1. Went to Ubuntu website to download ISO
2. Downloaded it
3. Runned Virtual PC and named it Ubuntu and clicked Other and etc. which im sure i have done right :D
4. Clicked start

then what do i do, all i know is how to creat a new virtual os but what do i do know? Please tell me its only because i want to test drive ubuntu before i actually install it to my PC :) could you please help a friend out

For most the simple advice is to download the live for cd version of any distro to see if that's one you would want to install. Ubuntu 8.04 is the current version available with the beta for 8.10 now seen as well at http://www.ubuntu.com/

Once you select the type of download for the type of system you are running you simply burn the ISO type disk image onto a cd-r and boot from the disk rather then your normal boot from the hard drive. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Generally most don't prefer using the install option seen on live cds however and prefer to perform a manual installation once set on a particular distro. But the live cds do offer some other benefits many are unaware of like retrieving files from a partition or drive when unable to rescue them while booted up in Windows.

An older 2004 article on Knoppix live can be applied to a live ubuntu release as well. The image below shows that put to the test. http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/



The image shows how a copy + paste of files and entire folders from an external usb drive when booted in ubuntu live. I gave the MS Virtual PC and VMWare both a try and wasn't quite able to get far with those. You have to buy the full version of VMWare apparently for that one.

uh, what? I ran debian on VPC like 2 years ago

You want to install it but point it to the ISO that you downloaded. It should run you through a wizard of sorts to allow you to configure the virtual machine.

You may want to get virtual box instead since it is free Open Source and runs everything you would need

Windows or at least versions prior to Vista can be run on a virtual machine in Linux and vice versa. In Windows you simply have to mount the iso image on a virtual drive not try to install direct. That would be a virtual cd drive in a sense.

It's similar to what is seen with DOSBox mounting a virtual C for running old 8bit and 16bit apps in the 2000/XP/Vista enviroment. Who else would see the original 8bit Duke Nukem while not the 16bit Duke3D Dos/95/98 version run on Vista? :P
