Yup, but their notebook won't ever crash. So, all they have to worry about is spilling taco bell all over their notebook.

they all probably have macs because the school gave them out to the students or sold them to them at a discount. theres a lot of colleges that do that. the school selling them to the students at a discount makes more sense then giving them out in this situation since the one girl already had a laptop, she didn't need to buy one from the school.
 
educational discount is approximately 10%. So, you only save $100 for every $1,000 you spend. Unless the school buys in bulk (as in thousands) and gives them out, but I haven't ever seen that at a university level, unless its packaged with tuition.

From certain stand points a Mac is better for education. Higher quality, ease of use, reliable, powerful, very manageable, security, etc. If you have lets say 10,000 students at your University, and almost all of them have laptops. Those laptops will roam around all over the place from network to network, and it becomes a security night mare. You could set up NAP, or use a third party solution like MARS, or you could just go with a platform that has really no security issues with malware/spyware/viruses. Software is easier to install, no clunky registry to deal with, so on and so forth.

Also, Apple offers education discounts, which not ever PC manufacturer does. Apple also offers a bundle deal for college students that includes a free nano ipod and a free usb printer.
