Stupid LGA 775 limitations

So I'm still a user of a 775 board. I can't afford to build any entirely new system ( unless I buy one component every 2 months) <<that's cause if I'm going to build one it's gotta have quality. Anyway. I'm in need of a new processor for my asus board. It can support any dual or quad core. My computer actually runs games very well, which is what I do the most aside from using the internet. So I'm looking for the best CPU for gaming I could get for $200 or less. I've been having such a hard time deciding.
 
Hahaha. That's actually one of my biggest considerations. I have my dual cor oc'd from 2.6 to 3.4, I'm sure I can do something with that. Anyone have a better suggestion? or second this one?
 
get a used Q9450 or Q9550, i have two Q9550's and the 12mb of cache is amazing. you can find them for around 150-160 if you look hard enough.
 
Q6600 is old 65nm tech, runs hotter and doesn't overclock as well.

Q8000 series are low on cache, and when new they are overpriced. Q9550 is one of the best 775 cpu's there is, but hard to find at a decent price as mentioned.


What dual core do you have now? Are you an overclocker?


I found a Q9300 for a good deal at $125 shipped-

Thats a way better deal than a new Q8400 for $170 off newegg.

If he doesn't already have a good GPU, he could buy a cheap pentium 6000 series and clock it skyhigh, then put the rest towards a better GPU. System specs? I know you said it runs games well.
 
I have an [email protected] oc'd at 3.4.
I've got an radeon hd 5750 gpu.
6 gigs ddr2 6400 ram
On an asus P5Q deluxe.

I want the quad core over the gpu upgrade, for better mutlitasking, and for vt. And you're right that 9400 is a freakin good deal.

That's what i did. they are awesome clockers. mine reached 4.2ghz (2.8ghz stock) on air with 1.5v and a decent cooler! imagine what they can do on water or ln2 or something.

The 5300 can go further than 3.4ghz, my 6300 reached 3.5ghz on stock voltage, you can really push these things.
 
I'm really intent on the 9000 series. This would be awesome if I can find one at that price mid october when I plan to buy it. How much cache does it have? Sorry I'm on my blackberry


Edit: I know it can go higher but I can't get mine past 3.44 and keep it stable. My temps are great, even when I increase the voltage, but it refuses

6MB of L2 cache, runs at 2.66GHz, 1333MHz Front Side Bus
 
Dang. Haha. I was hoping for just a little more. What's your perspective on the 9500? If I can find one at a good price I can push my budget a little. My original goal was the 9650 but that's over 300

Q9500 is exactly the same aside from 133MHz higher clock, (2.83) not worth it if you ask me. The big jump comes when you go to the Q9550, same as 9500 only double the L2 cache, a fair bit more pricey, however. You could get it [9550] for slightly over $200 new if you looked hard enough, Try google shopping.

I would 100 percent definately throw out an extra 30 for that. Dang you are cool. I really hope that jazz is still there when I'm ready to buy.

Side note- how would I get my 5300 past 3.4? Any higher at all and it doesn't last 10 minutes before rebooting

What's the problem, temps, or voltage?
 
What voltages are you setting in the Bios? What CPU cooler are you running? And what program are you using to check temps?

Are you keeping your ram speeds in check? When you overclock the FSB it overclocks the ram too (in case you didn't know).

I would still go with the Q9300 I linked to for $125 shipped. You can't beat that deal. A Q9450 or 9550 is gonna be atleast $180, and it's not really THAT much more powerful than the 9300. The 9300 should clock easily to 3.5ghz or so with maybe a slight voltage bump. Still doable on a stock cooler. The P5Q-Deluxe is a good clocking board, you shouldn't have any issues.

Voltage is at 1.4. Honestly. I'm not sure what they were to begin with...so that's something that could be a problem.
I'm using a spin q heatsink fan combo. With the airflow I get from my intake and exhaust 120mm fans, there is like no heat. Realtemp says temps are 28-31. Ran prime 95 they got up to 50

Haha. No I didn't think about that at all actually. What should I do about that?

And. Its still in the air. It really depends on what I can find at the best price a month from now. But thabks all of you so much for your input
 
Well I'm 90% certain it's your ram then. What FSB speed are you at for that overclock?

The ram should have several speed settings. It's rated for 800 MHZ (400 actual since it's DDR) and at 3.4ghz you are around 265 FSB which is putting your ram up over 1000 MHZ by default. But there should be several settings in the Bios to lower the ram speed.

EDIT- OK I just looked since I also have a P5Q-Deluxe. In the AI tweaker menu, which is the some place you changed the FSB speed, the 3rd selection down from that is the Dram Frequency. Set it to the one closest to 800 MHZ and you'll be fine to overclock some more then.

Also actually, a couple below that is the Dram timing control. Manually enter the top 4 timings in this order- 5-5-5-15. Then you are good to go.
