stupid noob asking stupid question...

ok,my first cpu build ,all my parts just came in exept my case and moniter,so i whip out the psu just to take a peek at it until the rest of my stuff comes in (tomorrow) and plug it into the wall just to make sure it works ,so i turn it on and then nothing goes on in the psu,the fan doesint start twirling i dont hear any little contraptions in there working ,nothing now im guessing that it should obviously by a DOA but im a noob,so im not quite sure if it requires somthing else to work or if theres anything else i have to do on it to make it work ,because i really dontwant to send this one back to get a new one and have it not work because my noob a$$ is doing somthing wrong, any help would be greatly apreciated

k one more question ,i plugged it in to the mobo and a little light turned on on it so i know the psu works but the fan hasnt turned on ,but the psu is brick cold so im guesssing it only kicks on when it starts getting hot right?

the light on the motherboard means that it is getting power, but the power supply's fans should be on no matter how cold/hot it is. Did you install the CPU and the 4-pin connector on the motherboard?

dont know what the 4 pin thingy is and just hooked up the cpu,and the funny thing is that not even the fan on the mobo or the cpu is running

I can see this build will take a looong time lol. Well your better than me I dont know what this 4 pin thingy is either, and wouldnt have known why PSU didnt work. I didnt realise a PSU had anything to do with a fan. I thought it was power supply unit. Whys a powersupply unit got need for a fan??? or does it not mean that?

EDIT: Hey psyco you edited your post and it makes me look more of an idiot now cos you taken out part where you said you didnt know what the 4 pin thing was lol.

There's a fan or fans inside teh PSU which should start up when you turn the PSU on.

Turning the PSU on itself will feed 5vdc into the motherboard, but the MoBo won't necessarily turn on. You will have to find the power switch pins and short them momentarily to get the system to start.

but the one led lightthat lights up on the MoBo,doesint that mean that the MoBo is getting power from the power supply, and where do i start to look for the power switch pins and how do i short them.......and will this have to do with opening up the psu??

and oh yea i forgot to say i feel like an idiot for not knowing this stuff

No need to open up the PSU at all. The 5vdc will feed the little LED, but the motherboard (and the rest of the computer) also requires 3.3vdc and 12vdc and these and more current for the 5vdc won't be available until the computer turns on.

Look in your motherboard manual for the pin assignments... you will need this for installing the case cabling anyway. There's usually a header of approx 9 pins, they may be labelled on the board. When you short the two power switch pins, be sure they are the only pins you short together.

There are 2 power cords that need to be plugged into the motherboard, a 20/24Pin and a 4Pin. The 4Pin powers the CPU.

i foud the 4 pin connector and i plugged it in and still the stupid fans arent turning ,but i still havnt done the shortig thing because i dont know what you mean by shorting them together and all that ,and throgh a little bit of inspection i found that my 24pin power cord is only a 23pin (it is missing one) does this matter? and its not even just like the little pin broke off there is an entire wire missing, is this intentional or is it an assembely defect ????

ok, i connected the power switch to the mobo nothing so i finnaly meant what was meant by shorting together the pins,so i shorted pin 1and2 of the CCMOS
with a flathead screwdriver NOTHING

k one more question ,i plugged it in to the mobo and a little light turned on on it so i know the psu works but the fan hasnt turned on ,but the psu is brick cold so im guesssing it only kicks on when it starts getting hot right?
Gotta hit the power button to turn the computer on

dont know what the 4 pin thingy is and just hooked up the cpu,and the funny thing is that not even the fan on the mobo or the cpu is running
See your motherboard manual for how to get most of the stuff up and running

but the one led lightthat lights up on the MoBo,doesint that mean that the MoBo is getting power from the power supply, and where do i start to look for the power switch pins and how do i short them.......and will this have to do with opening up the psu??
Read your manual :) You dont wanna be shorting the pins every time you want to turn the box on do you? That means u need to set the front panel jumpers, which means u need to read your manual

is it right that i have like four 4 pin connecters or do i have the wrong connector?
PSU 101 Only one is called the ATX12

Read your manual....

Power switch pins? are you talking about what is on the motherboard, to turn the computer on? You have to touch two adjacent pins on the motherboard with something metal like a screwdriver, look in the manual if you don't know where they are. Don't go touching all the pins with a screwdriver. I assume that the switch on the back of the power supply is set to "on", right? Last suggestion I could make is make sure the connectors aren't loose on the motherboard. I once thought i plugged in the connector well, but every time i bumped my case the computer shut off. It was the atx power plug that wasn't plugged in all the way.

ok heres how i understand it... ive had case power button problems before...
there are two pins that you need to plug the power button into, it doesnt matter which way its plugged in, as long as theres a connection. once youve plugged in
1. the 24/20pin power switch into the mobo,
2. 4pin connector into the mobo,
3. extra power connectors on mobo? pci-express powerrrr
4.power switch
then it should turn on.
