Stupid question of mine

Hello all. I have what is probably a stupid question. I would like to think the reason I can't answer it myself is because I am lazy but that probably isn't it. My question is this:

I have a game and it says that it needs a video card that is at least 64 MB DirectX 9-compliant video card and needs DirectX 9.0c or higher. It then gives a list of supported video cards but some of these cards on the list are only directx 7/8.1 compliant. Would this cards still work?

At least 64mb in size? I can't think of any recent AGP or PCI-Express model cards that are less then 128mb and are already DX 9 compliant. Are you runnin an old boat anchor for a system? I would have to start looking at P I+II and old AMD K5 setups to see 64mb cards used.

Yes, this is an older system. I might even need to get a PCI card as I haven't looked to see if the motherboard has a AGP slot (I know some pre-built machines don't come with them). I already know of cards I can get in the budget range, just not sure if they would work since they are DX 7/8.1 but it says DX 9 compliant.

You should know the type of card whether added on or onboard right off by a quick look at where the monitor is plugged in. If it is direct to the board then you are limted there to 32 or 64mb. On some of the latest boards with onboard video the amount climbs to 128mb there. What make and model is the board or system there. That would be a big help in looking over the specifications on it.

I don't know the make or model of the board. It is in an older eMachines computer which I don't have with me right now to open up. I already know that the games won't play as it is right now, I just need to know if I can buy one of the lower cards even though they are only DX7/8.1 compliant. After I open the computer, I will be able to see if I need to go PCI or AGP.

To run some of the newer games you would need a 128mb card with DX 9c installed. The compliancy is for the "minimum of" the older versions of direct x not exclusive to them. On those you need "at least" DX 7 or 8. With eMachines you would either have an AGP or pci type card unless it was sold without it with the onboard being used. That depends on how old and model.
