Subnetting!

I learned how to subnet Class C IP's today in Cisco Networking

It fairly easy because its only one octet to worry about, I'm fearing Class B and Class A subnets

One thing i didn't understand though, is that if there is only 126 Class A ip addresses in the world, how come my networks IP address is 71.227.24.242 (hackers, my network is very secure, don't even try)

Its rather confusing, i have comcast internet

There are 126 addresses licenses 1.x.x.x - 126.x.x.x but there are over 16.7 million usable IPs in each license.

For example; if your ISP owns the license for one of the 126 class A addresses (like 71.0.0.0) then they will have over 16.7 million IPs to issue to their customers and/or to use within their own network.

I think that class B licenses have around 65,000 addresses and a class C has 254.

Does this help?

yeah i teacher told us about that, she said standford owns a class a IP and some other companies, so im guessing comcast owns 71.0.0.0 abd 76.0.0.0 because my IP has been on those two ips, i guess they plan to have 30 millions internet users someday...thanks

Actually, some companies will sub-lease any unused IP that they might have. So, Comcast might be sub-leasing thier unused IPs OR the some of the IPs that they use might be leased from someone else.

Of course, when IPv6 comes out you can through all of this out the window. Subnetting should become REAL interesting then.
