my system is running 2 gigs, 4x512, and it turns out, when i maxx the slots, they run at 333 insted of 400, and when i push them to 400 the system crashes often... i take it then that if i want to keep 2 gb of ddr400 that i need 2x1gb sticks insted?

Most likely. I had a similar motherboard issue, when i had 4x double sided memory sticks, it runs at DDR333. It actually said it in the manual, you should see if yours does.

This also happens with a lot of OEM machines, like my Compaq Presario. It only has 2 slots, and when both are filled it runs at DDR333

its probably also running at 2T instead of 1T - that means its even slower than .83 times the speed of ddr400.
ddr333 is just fine as long as its running in dual channel. benchmark it using sisoftware sandra and tell us what your bandwidt looks like.
make sure all of the sticks are specified to run at ddr400 speeds.
cpu-z will check each individual stick for you... ddr333 would show up as 166mhz instead of 200mhz.

if you're really worried about it, just get 2x1gb sticks... but i suggest you don't waste you money.
also, try loosening the timings and running it at ddr400, or maybe upping the voltage a bit might help it.
the reason it needs to run slower is because the processor only has 2 memory controllers. with 2 sticks it runs dual channel, but with more than two it needs to slow down to 2T.
weird that it needs to run it at ddr333 though... never heard of that before.

im a gamer, lol... and yeah, it said it in the manual... but the thing is... its not only is it at 333, but its at 2T aswell, so im suffering, and am about to pull two of my sticks out and just use 1gb at DDR466+1T timings....

it all depends on what you plan on doing, whether it needs more ram or bandwidth.
if i were you, i'd just buy 2x1gb lol if you can afford it, and sell the other ram.

i sold my old corsair XMS for 50% original price and bought my current ram, i couldn't be happier. :)
