sudden high temps

I have just been playing far cry 2 and for some reason my cpu shot up to 80 degrees and my computer was running like a turtle. Now I understand that there must be a problem for my cpu to get up to that temperature considering a week ago I was playing crysis with no problems. My CPU is stock speed and has stock cooler (i am meaning to replace this) anyone got any ideas?

Ideas might be your CPU fan started malfunctioning (slowing down or stopped), or your heatsink fan assembly might need a very good cleaning.

ok I cleaned the inside of my system, it wasnt what I would call filthy but i cleaned it anyway. However cleaning it had no effect on the temp of my cpu. at the moment it is idleing at 60. so does thin mean that I need to replace my heat sink or is there a way I can fix it?

well before you go all out on a new heatsink, look at the thermal paste, you may need to replace it or put more on, heavy gaming you may need to. If not im with the others on the heatsink.

well it must be the heat sink. I have the side off the case and the temperature still wont drop under 60 degrees. think i need to spen some money and buy a new cooler

Safe thing to do would be to replace the heatsink, but also use some good thermal paste while you're at it. Did you check the thermal paste yet?
