Sudden Shutoff

My self build has been running for about 4 months now and today it decided to just shut off. i was playing supreme commander when it happened the first time and now it only runs maybe a few minutes and it will shut off with a 5-10 min break inbetween restartups. i have an asus P7P55D Pro motherboard and a intel i5 quad core processor. i have been playing this game for several weeks now and it just did this today. i have a 650 power supply so i dont think it is a lack of power.

Please Help
 
sounds like it might be a heat problem, but it is weird that it only started recently. do you monitor temps at all?

i have not, what is a cheap way of monitoring temp? i have been thinking the same thing with a heat problem but i just dont know

it is the standard heat sink that came with the intel chip, power supply is a crossair TX650W power supply.
 
i have just tried restarting it and it lasted several minutes then shut off and when i went to restart it again it lasted 30 sec.

i have a feeling it is getting reading of high heat and shutting down instantly

i had the same problem with a 400W coolmax PSU and swapped it for a stock 250W Dell and it worked fine after..

so maybe a bad PSU? try swapping it and see if the problem still exists
 
yeah i would try a different psu if you have one laying around or can borrow one. it doesn't really sound like a heat problem anymore.
 
corsair has me do a "staple test" where they see if the fan is running or not. i dont think that this is a real test since the power supply isnt running anything except the power supply fan.

and no i dont have an extra lying around which is a bumper since i know there is one back at my families place
 
well i got the psu replaced with a brand new corsair psu. same one but brand new. they replaced it with long wait.

still the same problem. i am now afraid it is the cpu and its cooling.

would the cpu be competely fried or does it just require a new cooling system.

or is it the motherboard and completly fried... f myself with issues
 
If it seems to be shutting off intermittently, especially under load, my first thoughts are high temps. As stated, get yourself a temperature monitoring program so we can either identify the problem, or at least rule it out. Check to make sure all your fans are spinning on components (CPU, GPU or any others you may have) and that they are more or less dust free.
 
well it is hard to upload a temp monitoring program when it only lasts several minutes before shutting down.. the fans all work. only minor dust and i have blown all of them off with can of air.
 
Time to see what sort of temperatures you get. Download Prime95 and HWMonitor, install them both.

Monitor your temps with HWM first to see what they are. might want to take a screenshot (alt+prt scr and then paste it into paint and save) or write them down.

Then open up prime95 and do a small fft test, and monitor your temperatures again. most likely they will shoot up and if it's a temperature problem, it may reach 75c or more and then shut itself down to prevent damage.

Check your temperatures using LinX and Realtemp. Run LinX for a few minutes, and see what your load temperatures are, post back with what your maximum temps turn out to be.
 
well i cant download or upload anything on my computer because it wont stay on long enough.

so... should i just buy a new cpu fan and hope that remediates the issue or should i call intel and hope to get a new intel i5 and just have a new cooling fan to go with it, to hopefully avoid this issue some again.
