Suggest a Backup Laptop?

My wife has a Macbook Pro and is happy with it. Her job requires her to be extremely dependent on it and I am worried what would happen if it crashed or broke. I'm always nagging her about backing up her work (which she does) but now I'm trying to convince her to get a second cheaper laptop, in case this one breaks. She actually uses mostly the PC software, so an Apple is not critical.

I'm looking for suggestions on a reasonably priced, lightweight, reliable laptop. She mostly uses it for email and Microsoft Office software.

Thanks for your help.

You're right, sorry. Looking to spend anywhere between $500-$1000 and would have a DVD drive. Also wondering if any of the netbooks would work.

Do u really want to stick with a laptop for backup, many people use external hard drives for it. Looking at your budget I suggest you buy a sony vaio.

The reason for the laptop is because whe would still need to get on the web and also use the software. This is in case the laptop she is currently using breaks down and may not be usable for a week or two.

I'm not sure what software she uses, but just be aware that there is a chance the software she uses is only licensed for that particular computer, so if you try to install the software you may not be able to activate/run it. You should check with her work before copying over applications from her laptop to another one that you own, unless you only want the backup laptop for the basics such as internet, e-mail, word processing, etc.

The likely hood of her Pro physically going bad is pretty slim, you may go years without ever needing a backup laptop. In my opinion, you would be better off using an external hard drive for data backup, then when/if the time comes to use another laptop, run out to the nearest store and pick one up. That way you don't spend $500 on a secondary laptop that may become outdated without being used.

I guess I need to mention that she also flies a lot and you know how travel can be with these computers. If I bought her another computer, I was going to install all of the necessary software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
