suggestions for home file sharing server

i am getting a computer soon for free. i want to set up a file sharing server on it so i can access files on it from my other computers at home AND over the internet. i also would like to stream music from the server without downloading the music directly to the client. is there any program or network operating system that can do this for me, hopefully cross-platform? any suggestions would be helpful.

you could use xp... just remote into it from the remote pc... you will have to have a static ip though... the streaming music im not sure on...

network magic pro. originally pure networks, now purchsed by cisco. excellent interface. network map, access to your router settings and status, tools everything. prob 49USD or so. way better than windows networking. sorry choppy post too much caffiene today.
