suggestions to STOP SPAM on here

i noticed that every once in a while, there are people that register just to make a thread advertising/selling stuff (aka spam). it happens so often on this forum because it's so easy to create an account in less than 5 minutes to spam and leave contact info hoping that someone would email them. i also wondered why XS gets none, even though they get more traffic, and i realized that when i registered a long time ago, it would take a few days for your account to be usable after you register and create it. this helps prevents spammers from instantly spamming right after they create an account.

so to the mods: would it be a good idea to wait a few days for validation after the account is created? this would help in the long run of constantly manually deleting those unwanted spam threads

yeah but then people that have a question that needs to be answered asap they cant

one way is no posteing url for the first 10 posts

Or make it so you can't register with a free email account.

Yeah, that could work, but a lot of people use free e-mail accounts.

The thing is there are not mods or admin on all the time, so they can't get onto it straight away.

I'm a mod on another forum and i do get onto the straight away, because i'm on most of the time :P

Now that's a bad idea... like Tuffie said, it pisses me off hardcore and like Cohen said, many people use free e-mail accounts, I wouldn't be here if I was forced to use work e-mail (which I don't have) or the one that comes with the internet (which I don't have either).

How about some kinda limit that new members are limited to, say, a maximum of 3-5 posts a day until their account is verified? An occasional spamposts isn't even remotely as bad as those who post 7 posts in every category...

3-5 posts is to many, I think one max a day for their first week, and make sure they know that's why they cant post.

also while ian is going to look at this, we seem to get a lot of duplicate threads, is the duplicate thread timer set high enough?

The problem is a bug i think... It happened to me when i click "Post": i'm notified that i have already posted that and i should wait few seconds. Who doesn't know about this bug will press "Post" again and the reply will appear twice.
It's a bug, man...

is it really that bad? i rarely see spam, as the moderators have usually dealt with it by the time i come around. the reporting spam thread seems to be doing the trick. any extra measures taken to get rid of it will just annoy current and potential members of CF. the blocking of free emails is a terrible idea, because a huge amount of people use yahoo and gmail and NO ONE is willing to register another email account just to use a forum. this is the internet, there is always going to be a little spam. maybe its just better if we turn a blind eye and continue reporting it

I was thinking about the first 10 posts or so have to be approved by a mod before becoming visible, like on astranet.

preventing people registering with free emails is not going to work. i'm assuming that most people have email accounts that are free. waiting for the first few posts to be approved might work, except that will require a tremendous amount of work from the mods to read every one of those posts.

my suggestion is to simply not allow new accounts to post for a few days until they are manually activated my the mods. it only takes 1 mod to activate all new accounts at the same time once a week, no matter when they were created that week. that way it's much less work for mods, but keeps the spam to almost zero. yes, it might turn off many people from making an account here, but if they really want an account on here, then it's worth the wait.

this is just taking a great idea from another forum that's been tried and true, and implementing it on here.

here's a thread for more info on XS's manual account activation: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=185612&page=2
