i'm extremely grateful for forums like these where i can learn stuff. after much research, i bought amd x64 3800 with geforce 6600, 1 gb memory, 160 gb hd. even bought windows xp professional. why why why in the world am i not impressed with my games and speed of my new EXPENSIVE pc? i'm really hoping that there are things that i need to tweak WITHOUT overclocking. my fps on battlefield 2 is freaking shameful. this computer should be able to run higher resolution than 800.600. please show me how to adjust whatever needs to be adjusted to get good fps and faster system.

thx.

Is that 3800 a dual core? (I assume not becuase you didn't say X2) If it is that will be part of the slow down. The 6600 isn't that powerful of a card, the 6600GT is somewhat fast, but with less than a 6800GT you are really bottlenecking performance.

it is a dual core, but even if my 6600 isn't a 7800, shouldn't i still be able to run battlefield at more than 800*600? and the os seems kinda slow also.

What detail level are you running? There's no way it will run smoothly @max, try medium for everything.

i think u should run it better than that
i don't have BF2, but i run most games in 1024x768, like FEAR i run it on 1024x768 with medium settings, and both quake4 and cod2 i run them on 1024x768 with high setting.

but i don't know why u couldn't run this game above 800x600
try to download the latest driver and make sure that AA (Antialiasing) is off in the video setting of BF2

i was running everything at medium and still choppy. but i don't have internet at the moment (using my brothers pc now), so maybe it is a driver issue. i am running directx 9.0c. but my pc is not blazing fast either, which i expected it to be. are there some options in the bios or hidden in xp that would enhance things besides hardware acceleration? thanks for your responses.

I am also puzzled to the supprisingly low level your system runs games at. Different games are dependant on different factors, for example Half Life 2 may be more cpu dependant than doom 3. Maybe the setup you have has a lower potential performance compared to other hardware in the same series as yours. By this I mean maybe your cpu lacks cache size. I do not know if all this is true, I am just guessing here.
Also check you have all the latest drivers from the respective website.
What brand of ram is it, basic or major branded?
Read reviews on the internet of gaming perfomance of your hardware, and see if you can tweak anything.
Hope this has been helpful :)
(Be grateful, at least your system runs anything better than half life 1!):D

Somethings to look at...
Right click "My Computer" and go to "properties". It may very well be that your mobo defaulted to lower clock speeds. The x2 3800 should be running at 2.0GHz.

Also go to your start menu and click "Run..." type "dxdiag" (without quotes). Go to your display tab. This should display your gfx card info. In the upper right side of the window should be driver stats such as "Main Driver", "Version" etc...
Post whats beside Main Driver, Version, and Date. This might help us.

A 6600 isnt exactly a high end (with respect to Battelfield2) videocard ... that and the fact that BF2 is horribly coded doesnt help

You can play at 1024x768 prolly but you'll have to drop the settings even more

So we can get some numbers ... what ARE the framerates you're getting? and are you accounting for the long time it takes to load the game even after its loaded?

i ran all my games at 1280x1024 and they're all PLAYABLE.
Yes but you have a totally differerent configuration

You said that it is a dual core cpu right? Then, did you install AMD X2 dirvers? If not, then install them. Here you have a link (the driver is at the bottom of the page):
Thats only needed for throttling

Many people with issues while gaming with X2s (like having very slow framerates or the game going way too fast) had to install this driver plus the microsoft one to solve their problem.

I'm not saying that this is surely the cause of his problems since his video card is not high-end. However, it is always good to discard possibilities.

Bye,

thx for your input. when i get internet, i'll download those two drivers. i don't even know how to check fps. are those reasons that my os seems slow? i just bought the pc. what would you suggest that i do, without spending more money, cuz now i'm broke.

the 6600 is better than the 9600XT (i think), and im able to play bf2 on my pc at 1024x768 at medium settings around 30-40fps.

yea ofcourse 6600 is better than 9600XT, but maybe BF2 is not customized for nVidia thats why i think it is not running fine for him, but other games like QUAKE4, FEAR and call of duty 2, all of them run fine on 6600 at 1024x768

or maybe BF2 is not running fine for him becasue the one he have is maybe 128MB, not 256MB, like the one i have

Possibly but reading the description (and from what i expected) the driver from AMD's site is for enabling and supporting CoolNQuiet. As for the Windows update, I dunno, i not using it on either my X2-3800 or X2-4200 without observable issues (but thx for informing me of the existence of such a patch ... i might look into it sometime) :)

Absolutely :)

For all intents and purposes, it is.

but maybe BF2 is not customized for nVidia thats why i think it is not running fine for him
If i recall correctly, BF2 is a TWIMTBP game :)
