Summer Server

I want to build a server this summer.
What would the best type of server be?

Email, domain, gaming server, ext.

Once I get the type nailed down, I would like to know the recommended specs.


Any other information would be great.

It all depends on what your interests are and what your budget is.

If you like gaming, do a gaming server.
If you like web design/i-net technology, do a web server.
If, for some strange reason, you love to play with emails, make an email server.

As for budget... just about any modern computer would be fine to act as a server. If you got some extra money to spend, you could go with some dual proc servers and stock up on some RAM, especially if you plan to host gaming servers.

As for server software, there are plenty of free open source stuff out there, though gaming would vary quite a bit.

It all depends on what you plan to do with it.

Noticed you are in to music. A podcast server would be a lot of fun. =)

I've always wanted to build a downloading server. Like, stick in two or three wireless cards, and put it in a friends closet in town where you can pick up like three or four wireless networks wherever you go and then just mooch internet to download torrents.

Or is that immoral?

Yeah, that would be very illegal. I wouldn't recommend doing such a thing as it put other people in jail and ruin their lives.
They could also triangulate your location through signal strength and find you.

*puts on black hat*
That would be awesome. Assuming there are enough unsecure wifi networks in range, you could totally have loads of torrents running.
