Supplemental power cable, 4-pin or 8-pin?

My PSU has both a 4-pin and 8-pin +12V cable. My motherboard by default has the extra 4 pins covered with a cap, so I went with the 4-pin cable. Does it matter? Is it better to remove the cap and use the 8-pin cable? What's the difference?

the 8 pin delivers no more maximum power then the four pin.the The 8pin +12V was supposed to supply power to 2 cpu sockets over 4pin that supplies 1 socket. You can plug the 8 pin cable in, this helps if your cpu uses a lot of power. if it's wired as 8 independent wires from the PSU, those wires will have more current carrying capacity than 4 wires between the PSU and the motherboard. It's all about increasing current carrying capacity. In reality nothing realy happens

The 8 pin is an EPS 12V connector, designed primarily for server boards. It delivers more power for those power hungry chips than a standard 4 pin ATX 12V connector does.
