Surround Sound Not Working!!!

Hey guys, i just got my new PC and it came with a 7.1 sound card (Realtek HD Audio) and a digital Coaxial output, i plugged my Digital Coaxial Cable into it and my Onkyo HT S580 Receiver, but i cant get true surround sound to work! I installed the latest drivers and everything but it just wont work! I can get surround sound though when i plug in my Surround Sound Headphones (except they use different plugs and not a Coaxial Cable)

so PLEASE help me! ANY suggestions would save my life

i posted this in the audio section a while ago but no one even looked at it so sorry if this is considered a double post but i have spent the last 5 hours of my day trying to solve this problem and i really would like to solve it

dxdiag
run the sound tests
and tell me if you find any errors

is says all tests were successful except it was only doing stereo and mono tests
