help me put together a home surveillance machine. i'm looking at this capture card:
AVerMedia NVDNV5000 4 x BNC Advanced MPEG4:

would like to upgrade to two maybe three of those, but just one for now,

i already have a case, os hdd & will be using linux + zoneminder, and i'll get a 1tb wd blue drive for storage.

i need mobo/cpu combo to handle this. no budget, but doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, just something good ;)

i'm thinking going with amd, but i'm not familiar with their sockets & stuff.

thnx

definitely get more drives. 3 would be a good start to a decent raid setup. thats a pretty decent dvr card btw. you are on the right track

ok, i found these:

AMD Athlon II X4 630, $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103704

ASUS M4A77TD AM3 AMD 770, $85
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131603

looks like a good combo, what u think?
also, reading over the zoneminder wiki, i think ip cameras using RJ45 are faster and better than BNC type. if this is true, then the capture card i had in mind will not do.

you dont need to be getting a quadcore for a decent dvr setup. most of the dvr servers at my surveillance job were pentium 4's and pentium d's, and they worked well. the important piece of them is your dvr card, and your raid configuration

true, but, i mean, why not..?

holy moly! have you seen them cameras??
they start at $150 at newegg. there are so many to chose, man, this will take a while...

i can refer you to my old boss, you could probably order quite a bit of surveillance supplies for relatively cheap. hes got all the goodies you could imagine, for... thats his business :)
